Brake Squeal
I put this on bimmerfest.com too, so for those of you who multiforum, sorry
So here's the deal. My front brakes squeel, dealer says its normal and that the Z4M brakes are known for it... So is it an epidemic or just a fairy tale?

What kind of car brakes squeel and its considered normal? If i were told that by the stealership, I would of laughed in his face and stayed there till they fixed it.

Well...they offered to replace that pads/rotors anyway, but they didn't have the parts on hand. So I was like uhhh...no thanks. I just thought I'd investigate a little further before I call em up and tell them to order the parts.

I get a mild squeal from time to time as well (not as noticeable as yours). I'm attributing it to the colder weather, but am keeping tabs on it in case it gets worse. Still though... quite embarrassing when it happens in front of a crowd of onlookers.
Take their offer for pad replacement. Pad replacement is covered as part of maintenance anyway, although they don't usually have authorization to replace them until they've worn down thin enough (<4mm IIRC). |

I get squeaking on my e60 5-series nearly ALL the time and the dealer keeps trying to tell me it's normal. He claims that the brake pads get glazed when the brakes aren't applied hard enough and that's what can cause them to squeal. He claims that I need to find a safe place and slam on the brakes and that'll fix it. I've had the pads replaced twice now due to this and tried his "theory" and although it's helped significantly is still hasn't gone away. I've owned several American and Japanese cars in the past and NEVER had a problem with this. SO far I've only had problems on my e60, not my e85.

Apparently if you bed-in the brakes it goes away...I haven't had enough time to try it yet. Stoptech's website describes a couple procedures...I'll definately give it a whirl this weekend and let y'all know how it works out.

My service advisor told me to try the 60 - 0 mph fix. Get it up to speed and stand on the brakes. haven't tried it yet.

Depending on the squeel coming from the front, sometimes dirt can get caught between the rotor and the pad causing the noise. Is there any pitting on the rotor surface? |

Thats is just it, higher performance brakes are more likely to squeel. They also give off more brake dust, for those that complain about dirty wheels. You want clean wheels with no squeel, you will no doubt sacrifice performance with different pads.

Last time I took her out no squeel...could've been dirt...or maybe I was just stomping on the brakes better.
