If you have a pre-Nseries engine Z4 then you have a huge selection of headers because it shares the M54 engine with the E46 3-series. There is a thread on e46fanatics.com that documents the proven "eBay headers" for the M54 engine. N52 engine thats a whole different story.

I would like to order the ebay headers for my z4 M. I wish someone could describe or show a picture of how the rear o2 sensors need modification to clear the transmission. Let us know how your install goes and best of luck!

I will! I was peeking under the hood and it looks that it is going to be quite an install. It's pretty cramped where the header goes. Let's see when I remove the heat shield and other parts. My main concern is the before cat O2 sensors. They need to have a longer cable. By the way has anyone had problems with the passenger window not going up?

Cut me some slack! As soon as I get the headers I will post pics and give my general impressions about quality and how was the installation.

I have the ebay headers for my m coupe. JVT headers. Fit is good and I orginally left the post cat (rear) o2 sensors out. I just unplugged them under the valve cover and took the sensors and pluged up the post cat o2 sensor bungs. This caused a Service Engine Soon light to come on. This has no effect on performance as the post cat o2 sensors are only used because of obd2 diagnostics for the cats.
The light was kind of annoying so I took out the headers and welded up 2 more bungs on them in my garage as so they would clear the transmission. And used the "spark plug fouler" trick to space the o2 sensors. Then used my OBD2 tool and cleared the codes. No light came on but after a day the light came back on with a post cat o2 code reading lean, probably because they were spaced too far out of the exhaust stream. I guess the ecu is really picky about the post cat o2 signals. Next i might try a o2 simulator or the forsure method and remove the ses light bulb in the cluster. I have a post floating around with more detail but no pics. As for performance gains I have no actual numbers but you can ask chaforjohn, he's driven mine then his back to back, and the response and power on the jvt headers do make a difference. Hope this helps. |

Did the CEL cause any problems?

I agree with JC5 and thanks to him cuz I bought coated supersprint headers off him.
You will need two 2.25" cats and you can have a shop weld flanges on them and attach them post header, then weld 2 bungs in post cat and have them extend your o2 sensor cables. This is a must or you will get CEL. The o2 sensor adapters that move the sensors out of the way don't work for BMW's. They have a high and a low range that they need otherwise CEL. So too much or too little causes CEL. I suggest just getting 2 catco highflows. I've found these to be the most affordable and the car will still pass emissions. |

We originally had 2 hiflow cats on an M54 engine. They threw codes similar to "cat below efficiencey" & another directly relating to the cat & o2 sensor.
Eventually they were taken out and a set of Magnaflow OBD2 cats were put in and the problems were solved. Also the hi-flow cats reaked of unburnt fuel. |

I also in staled EBay Headers and a Ebay intake on my 03 2.5i z4 m54 and I also got the cat below efficiencey code so i called VAC Motorsports and they said that I need a ecu flash because that even if I didn't get a code the stock ecu would compensate for the headers and intake and I would not get much gain till I did the ECU flash. I have not got my ECU flashed yet it cost $650. Steve at VAC said they did just a ecu flash and a diamond muffler and gained 30 HP

You WILL see a decent gain without a tune. If the tune alters the readings from the secondary O2's, your car will not pass OBDII emissions. However, a tune will allow your car to take full advantage of the headers.
I prefer the Shark Injector tune by Jim Conforti, although I'm not sure if it's designed to take into account aftermarket headers. It costs less than $400, and you can install it yourself at home; other tunes require you to mail off your stock ECU, which I've found to be both a pain and expensive... and your car is down for a week or two. Stock cars typically see a 5 whp gain after a Shark reflash. The best part is the throttle remap and 7k rpm redline. Generic mail order tunes < header-specific tunes < dyno tunes

speaking of ebay headers, i have a brand new set at home. They were intended for my friend's E84 M coupe, but now he moved to another country. I think they fit E46 M3 too.
Anyhow, if anyone is interested, i can take pics with my tag. And how much do these usually go for? |
