The importance this development had on dynamic capabilities is hard to overstate. To provide perspective on the rate of technological change BMW has achieved, in 1990, the 8 Series, BMWs expensive technological tour de force coupe, was rated at 11,000 Nm. This was a closed car and the best BMW had ever achieved in a coupe!"
Torsional rigidity:
Z4 roadster: 14,500 N·m (10,700 lb·ft) per degree of body twist
Z4 coupe: 32,000 N·m (24,000 lb·ft) per degree of body twist

I have a 2006 Tiag Z4M Roadster and my advice is not to buy the coupe because of the torsional rigidity but rather the looks, slightly more aggressive suspension settings and steering and HPDE events that do not accept convertibles.

Now, if you're anything like me, you would get a Roadster, mod it till there's no tomorrow, put the top down and go for some canyon runs. For me, this is enough to choose the roadster.

.... especially if you have played with the exhaust enough ...

If you want the coupe, get the coupe - it will always bug you otherwise. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait. You can set up Autotrader.com natiowide search alerts. As rare as they are, they do come up from time to time.

I agree.

Seems to me the coupe/roadster choice is far bigger than the color. At no point did I think about not finding the color I wanted and settling on a different type of car.

Don't know why people get so technical with the rigidity of the body, the roadster is more than stiff enough for whatever your needs are. The soft top is curved around your head, so you got lots of headroom anyway

Its all personal preferences. For me, I'd be very sad if I couldn't drive this chassi with the roof down. Its a much more exciting, and involving driving experience

Lots of good info here, and not a single crack about all this talk of rigidity LOL!! Well done!!

It seems pretty clear to me that if you want to track the car, a coupe is likely the best bet, as roadsters would not meet the safety requirements for most events.

However if you don't want to track the car, you have a lot more options. You can choose between the appeal of open top motoring and the relative style attributes of the coupe and roadster. I have been very honest when I say I really like both cars but owing to not being a member of the "One Percent", I had to choose.

Cheers!

+1, and +1 to everything else said here. Its like real estate, get what you want that you cant change with paint or a wrench, (ie Location Location = Coupe or Roadster) and then Mod whatever you dont like about the car if you have to.

Both cars are ridiculously stiff for the weekend enthusiast. Get what draws you in the most. You'll love the car either way if you are a BMW nut like the rest of us are. BUT if you have to track with BMWCCA, take the advice here about the coupe.

You're a couple of years late for mine, now I'll NEVER let it go. In early '09 I had been out of work several months with NO prospects looming. The payment on my Coupe was $802/month. Unemployment in AZ pays $265/week MAX. Do the math, not such a bright idea to keep such a car while out of work. So I put her up for sale. I was asking $29k, mileage was at about 30k (she'd been my only car for a while), with plenty of factory warranty and free maintenance left (purchased August '07). I had lots of nibbles, but nobody serious, and within about 2 months, I realized I never wanted to part with her, and with about $29k left to pay her off, I said phuck it and pulled the $$ out of savings and paid her off. After returning to work I bought another DD and have kept the mileage down since.

Some really great replies in this thread, everyone seems to have great advice. Good to see no pissing matches develop over which choice is "better", because after all, they're both fine choices and it's all about personal need and preference. One thing I like is having an M-exclusive color (I-blue in my case). A minor detail to set the M cars apart from the non-M's.

Good luck in your search!

Now you're just being mean. IB is a color I would consider!
