hell while I'm in their i may as well change the vanos hub to the dr vanos upgraded unit..... seems silly to have all the labour of changing out these bolts to not do some upgrades while I'm in their...

I think getting a pump disc with smaller holes is the key to preventing broken tabs. If your hub is intact, then reducing the clearance between the tabs and pump disc will keep them from hitting each other with enough force to cause the tabs to break.
