Post Broken glass heated rear window

Has anyone had experience with aftermarket replacement rear windows for the Z4? Replacing the window using OEM parts requires replacement of the whole skin. Big $$ (as in $2300 plus labour). Some aftermarket options apparently exist - they still require replacing the whole skin - but are somewhat less costly (about $2200 labour included). Any advice on choosing between these two options?

hey Neighbor!

I am over here in St. John's. I thought that the heated rear window could be replaced without replacing the "skin", which I asume means the roof cover. Why not call Andy in the service dept at Halifax BMW? he is a great guy to deal with - I know from personal experience.

Cheers!

Hi there:
I chatted with Craig at BMW Halifax (and you're right - they are a great bunch to deal with). He double checked on the need to do the cover and couldn't offer me an option there, but he did put me on to the Apple Auto Glass folks he uses for his glass work in Halifax. They checked for alternatives, and while there are some types that can be repaired without doing the roof cover, it appears that I'm out of luck.

In any event, it is great to have dealer who is so helpful.

All the best.

Check with Bavarian Auto (www.bavauto.com) -- they have an aftermarket top that is much cheaper than the OEM part. There's a DIY on removing the top on this forum -- if you are handy and have the time, you could do it yourself.
