DIS and SSS/Progman are Dead. Hail the new King
My laptop with my BMTechnic installation died and with BMTechnic out of business, I had to go look for a new low cost or free solution when I replaced my laptop..
While doing a bunch of research, I found that BMW has replaced all of the old DIS and SSS/Progman software with something new and really GOOD. Its call Rheingold BMW Service Software. While it is designed to run on specialized hardware, it does work on a BMW ODB-II cable. It also works on all F series cars.... It combines DIS, SSS, INPA, WinFPK and the TIS and WDS all into one piece of software. It just works.... It runs on ALL versions of Windows from XP through 8.1, including 64bit.... In case you are wondering about NCSExpert, the new version DOES work with a 64bit os.... so you can still change your coding... You have to do a search to find the threads for information on where and how to download it. The install files are quite large and the complete install requires 32gig of space on the hard drive. Everything is point and click. If the diagnostic procedure requires a reinitialization, then it will ask you if you want do now perform it on what ever module or component you happen to be working on.... The following pictures are not screen grabs from my machine. I just forgot to do make them this afternoon when I had to reinitialize my Steering Angle Sensor. . . . . . . . . |

But you still need NCS Expert to recode E85/E86s?
Do you know if they newer version of NCS Expert will install on Windows 7 without running it through Windows XP mode? Last time I tried to set it up it didn't take, and you pretty much need a clean install of windows to try again. |

So if someone is interested in trying coding - where should they start? Is there something they should read or a good place to begin?

You really need to read a bunch of threads and download some of the documents you will find. Once you understand the process, the big hurdle is out of the way. NCSExpert is the software you need to read the module with and write the changes back to the module with. I would HIGHLY advise getting a companion executable called NCSDUMMY. It has been written by a BMW enthusiast... What it does is takes the raw coding from the module that was read and saved by NCSExpert and applies some German to English translations to the file making understanding what most of the software switches do. Then using NCSDummy, change what you want, save the file and then use NCSExpert to write the newly changed file to your module. The only 'BIG' advice is this: BEFORE you change and write back the coding files to the module in question, make SURE you make of copy of the virgin code file that is read from the module, so if you screw something up, you can always just write back the original file.... I have a backup copy of all the modules in the car. |

Thanks Shipkiller!!! Gave me something to do this morning and I've been thinking about obtaining WDS. It will be nice to have all this in one place. Now just have to make some room on my ancient Gateway XP laptop....

Thanks for the post -- when I installed DIS and SSS/Progman, it was a huge hassle to get everything setup correctly. It took hours....
Is this installation a lot easier, or is it still a huge chunk of time to get setup correctly? Chris

Next I will install it natively on windows. To anticipate the next question: I do not know if it works under 'bootcamp' for Macs.... |

I downloaded version 3.44.10 on an XP laptop. Install was fairly straightforward. Even though there is no e85 KMdaten folder, it still connected to every module in my car except cruise control. It read out fault codes that the old DIS couldn't read. They were one time electrical glitches. I cleared them to see if they come back in the near future.
Ship, thanks again for the post!!! |

I get to test out the module coding function sometime soon.
My Steering Angle Sensor is faulty, so that will require replacement, coding and alignment.... Right now my DSC is offline... |

I had a bright idea last night...
Since my BMTechnic install is on a harddrive that I cannot boot from, why not see if the two VM's (DIS and SSS) can be copied to my VM directory on my new laptop.. Well shipwreck.... yes they can, and they work....... So with that being said, you can have INPA, DIS/SSS (in VM machines) and Rhiengold all at the same time.... |

Here is where I found my version.
http://garage-automotive.com/ I used a thread for a standalone Rheinhold 3.44.10. I got mine to work on XP with no problems.

Thanks Jim!
I saw that one but was reluctant to sign up for the forum for what may have turned out to be a dead end.

Has anybody performed a vanos test in Rheingold? I tried to today, and it said it couldn't communicate with the vanos. I was able to run all the tests but Rheingold indicated that my vanos wouldn't adjust anything (even though I could hear my engine noise changing). Rheingold said that my vanos exhuast/inlet advance/retard spread tests were at 4 when the targets were either 123-133 or 75-85. It told me to check vanos oil pressure and all my connections and/or that my solenoid valves weren't stuck.
I tried to print a screen but Rheingold locked up with my car at 2000 rpm in the middle of testing! I had to restart the program to get my car to settle down. So I decided no more screen prints for a while. I reran the test in INPA and everything came out okay. Let me know if you've successfully done this test please.
