I believe you are correct. In Z4s other than the M, that space houses the battery and tool kit.

When I replaced my battery, I went to the 70 amp version. Stock is 60. That filled up the space. Guess they planned for that.

Thanks yall, I have only had the battery cover off once or twice, and never removed the floor board, so I wasn't too sure. I appreciate it
