1. Any one rotated it by putting a socket straight on the big hex on part #9 in the drawing? If so what size ratchet does that need.
2. What about attaching this NUT to the water pump and rotating CCW with a 32mm wrench/ratchet. Any issues? http://store.bimmerworld.com/water-p...-nut-p706.aspx

Thanks
Bruce

shit, I don't remember. I know it was a huge pain in the butt. I did it for the supercharger install. Be careful not to strip them. I guess try 8,10, and 12mm?

edit: looking at this midnight post, it seems like I answered a completely different question. hahhahaah

I put the car in reverse and pushed it backward. You could accomplish the same by putting it in a high gear and pushing it forward. This ensures the correct direction of rotation. When putting it in reverse, there is a surprisingly short distance to push before the cams rotate to the position you need. Maybe just a few inches. Takes a little effort, but no big deal.

I did not use the socket because I did not want to take the cooling shrouds apart. If you really want to use the socket, I heard that the M3 (E46) takes a 32mm socket. It may be the same for ours.

That's exactly what I did.
I was able to get a ratchet on there & with a pipe extension on the handle I was able to rotate it from the top side.
Socket is 32mm

..as you can see, it's tight but it works

Any cons against using a 24mm open end on the cam shaft?

Yes.
You don't want to put that kind of load on the cam chain.

I posted in my walk through to do as stated above and bump it backwards in reverse (to keep correct rotation. Easy to do by yourself and car only moves about 12" total to adjust and check valves.

Thanks all aaaand a couple more questions

1. Anyone have any luck finding a set of Offset (tappet) Metric Feeler Gauges that include 0.18-0.23 and 0.28-0.33mm in true 0.01mm increments. Not the end of the world but it would be nice. I have the sears 26 leaf set (0.005- 0.030"). I can make due with Offset Standard gauges, and a regular set of Metrics to do some in between. I just think its odd that Bmw spec'ed it Metric without the ability to measure with 0.01mm resoultion.

2. Am I right that normal wear causes the distance between the rocker and the cam to get smaller? I presume its because the valve seat gets pounded on and erodes along with the valve itself wearing where it hits the seat.

Thanks for all the replies -

Plan A - Big Socket directly on the Crank, thats what I was after.
