Rick, Thanks for the great post! It's wonderful to see your work - a mix of geographic history in a great machine to get you around. The post you made reminds me of the 'Baltimore County staff ride' my father made last year. We visited family sites and historical locations that included places like Hiss Church and cemetery, Bradshaw, the length of Sunshine Ave/Fork Rd, Glen Arm, Hydes, Hickory, Rocks, and all the way north to Pylesville.
I look forward to more of your work.

This was a fantastic post and I'm glad I read it. I do have one criticism though, and that is the over the top HDR processing on all your photos. It wasn't necessary for this story. Maybe a few of the photos, but it just kills most of them. Again, well done though.

Rick,

Please consider publishing a road trip book. Add a map of each of your trips at the beginning of each and I will gladly purchase vol 1. I'm assuming you have plans for more trips so a vol 2 would surely be in order.

Publish or not, thanks for yet another great post.

Safe travels,
Greg

Came back to see. You write the most incredible tales. I look forward to future ones!
No plans for trips. You nailed the reason why.

Rick, another exceptional story! Whenever I see one of your travelogues posted, I always try to read it as soon as I can because they are so entertaining. However, I know that when see one, it is going to tie me up for an hour or two just absorbing the wonderful stories, beautiful pictures and excellent history and allowing my imagination to "be there." Every time I saw this story come up in "new posts" I said I gotta find some time to read that. Well, Saturday morning, nothing to do, but entertain myself. Thank you so much!!

Rick, thanks for sharing this wonderful trek. Although I am not an American, the history lessons, background of people, names, and places I have known through school and the news have now greater background, and may say, romance to them.

Also I found interesting the famous legacy of the Duvall family. Currently Robert is married to the granddaughter of Argentinian aviator pioneer Susana Ferrari Billinghurst. There must be something in this gene pool that keeps the family reaching some heights of success.

bucko,

You've managed to dredge up an oldie but a goodie! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I thought the various Duvall Family connections and descendants were really interesting. Thanks for adding the part about Robert Duvall's wife and her history, which I was unaware of.

Rick F. - great story telling, er, historical information and your photography is most excellent. What brand and model camera(s) do you use and which editing program?

Thank you.

Zedfor,

Thanks! It's actually from about a year ago, but I'm glad you happened across it.

Eventually these will all go into a book (or a set of books, more likely). After all, I'm confident that I could sell at least 15 or 20 of them! For now, however, it's too much fun just going on the trips and writing them up.

phickson,

Thanks much! I use a Canon SX40 HS "super zoom" digital camera. It has all the manual controls I need, image stabilization, and an incredibly versatile zoom lens (24 mm to 840 mm!). Plus it's a handy size and weight and has very high quality video capabilities. Oh, and it's not all that expensive.

I use Photomatix Pro for high dynamic range (HDR) processing and iPhoto for general image editing. If I get desperate, I'll fire up Photoshop and use it to salvage an otherwise-hopeless photo or to put me in a vintage aircraft, flying over the NSA headquarters…
