Think it would be wise to add a serious brake kit to the Z4M (all 4 corners) to help level the playing field. Substitute that for the track wheels if you like.

I actually traded my 997 for my M roadster a couple of month ago...the S only has a difference of 35 hp as mine had the sport suspension and chrono package...I obviously like my M better but mostly b/c I'm not a fan of new porsche design not to mention they are not amateur driver friendly. It would understeer at the limit and then snap oversteer from the weight distribution!! But I do miss the traction from a dig!! What I don't miss is the $400 oil changes and reliability issues ,ins, and ride!

Although they are very different animals, I like even a naturally-aspirated M over a Carrera S. I've driven a 996 Carrera 4S and although I like its low end pull over the M, I think the M is more fun to drive.
Just yesterday I was in the middle of a Porsche sandwich on a canyon-carving run (995 Turbo in front, 996 Carrera 4S behind, and me in the middle. Every time the 911 Turbo pulled away I could quickly catch up. Just stayed in 3rd gear the most of the time - my Z4MR can run a wide band in 3rd from 2K to 7.5K rpm. Every time the 911 Turbo hit a tight corner he showed his brake light - I could run my Z4MR through the corner by simply lifting (in 3rd gear). And the way that BMW has tuned the DCT on the Z4M is simply perfect - not as tame as a 3-series - not as risky as no DCT at all! Don't get me wrong - I like the Carrera (I've never driven a 911 Turbo), but I like my Z4MR even more. Now if you put a blown Z4 against a Carrera S, I'd pay to take that test drive comparison!

I would take 997s, just to be an owner...unfortunately I don't consider Porsche's everyday cars and a 911 is just so much more car than I need. Comparing a GT3 is ridiculous, those are collector's cars.

+1,,, it also blows my mind that the Z4M's on this forum are faster than all Porsche's while the Z4M's the auto mags test are slower. I wish BMW would give the auto mag folks the same BMW's we buy to test against Porsche's.

I know the GT3 is faster, but it doesn't mean I want one.

Agree, I think the Porsche 977 series are wonderfully engineered drivers cars, but way over priced and way to expensive to maintain, as well as difficult to drive at the limit. Our 4's don't compete in the same class as them, but our 4's are better all around automobiles, period.
(Of course Porsche owners don't care in the least.) |
