DMTL failure : code 2A17

What is DMTL?

The DMTL (Diagnostic Module Tank Leakage) pump tests the fuel tank and fueling components for leaks by slightly pressurizing the fuel tank and evaporative components. The DMTL pump contains an integral DC motor which is activated directly by the ECM which then monitors the pump motor operating current as the measurement for detecting leaks.

Service advisor told me it is situated at rear of car behind fuel tank. He says the wires had apparently been ripped off. The module had to be changed. I track my car a lot, but I would remember if I had hit or scrapped something.

It's all emission based stuff, does not affect vehicle operations. May trigger check engine light.

I had to replace it on my dad's 545i, otherwise we couldn't get the car SMOGed for California Emissions.

It is a small pump that pressurizes the emissions evaporation system to make sure there are no leaks. My daughter in law has a 328i that I am attempting to change out this weekend. The dealer wanted $600 and said it had to be done or the car would not run! Wish me luck.

It amazes me how complicated the evap system is.
Not just on our cars. I've been fighting it on my Chevy trucks for ever.
