Track setup

Thinking of using stock 18 inch wheels along with fresh tires as a dedicated track set.

What sizes have you guys tried?

For the track I'm running E46 M3 18" wheels with Toyo R-888 tires 245/40-18 front and 255/35-18 rear. 10mm spacers up front to clear the TC Kline coil over struts. 3.5 degrees negative camber in the front and 2.0 degrees negative in the rear

I'd start with street tires over R-comps if you're just starting out. Since you'e using oe wheels that rules out squared setups. Just keep in mind too much rubber up front withou negative camber will make turn-in worse so if all else stock, I'd go no more than 235 up front. Plus tires like Direzzas run wide to begin with so 235 Stat Spec is probably close to 245 anyway.

I like Stat Specs a lot, can drive to track with them and perform exceptionally well in the wet (my past few events actually got hit with random showers). For a little less you can go Hankook R-S3. GRM did a review few month back saying they were the best street tire for track duty but their wet performance isn't as good as the SS and they don't last as long neither but for the price difference it's definitely worth considering imo.

@DSC_OFF

You are running a square setup on 17's right ? With coilovers iirc.

What widths wheel/tire are you running ? Would spacers be required on stock strut /spring ? Any other clearance issues ?

Recommended camber plates ?

If swapping back to oem staggered setup for non track, how bad does the negative camber effect things ? tire wear and handling.

Any more info you can share ? I'm trying to piece together a setup for track days ( that I can drive out there ), and the idea of a square 17 setup sounds appealing. Still stock suspension for now.

Thanks.

I run OE wheels with 235/265 Hankook RS3s.

Camber up front is -2.3 w/0 toe and -1.3 rear with 1/16th toe

For stock wheels we would recommend 235/40/18 front tires and 265/35/18 rear tires. These are one size up from the stock sizing but will offer better grip and will fit without problems. To go any wider in the front you will need negative camber achieved through camber plates. Like others have mentioned Dunlop Star Specs are a great track/street tire with really good wet and dry performance. The Hankook RS3 has a little bit better dry performance, especially when the weather is really hot, but suffers when there are wet conditions.
