2006+ Owners -- need your input on top

Hi Everyone,

I'm picking up my '06 Z4M tomorrow but need assistance from you '06+ owners.

On the '03-'05 cars, the top had a locking mechanism such that the top would actually lock into a mechanism when the top was all the way down. In other words, you could take your hand to the top (exposed portion) of the roof and not be able to pull it up -- it was locked into place.

I have heard on the '06+ cars, you can actually take your hand and move the roof up -- in other words, there is no locking mechanism. This is the case on my '06 car, and I want to be sure that is OK.

Before I pick the car up, I want to be sure the roof is operating the way it's supposed to be.

Can you '06-'08 owners with a power top try to lift the top with your hand? On my '05, you can't move the top with your hand, but it appears the '06 cars are different.

If you need a better explanation of what I'm trying to ask, let me know

Thanks for your help

Chris

You're asking if you can lift the roof away from the windshield's top edge, while the roof is closed obviously. Right?
If you don't get a quicker answer, I can check out my dad's '06 Z4M Roadster this evening.

Thanks for your quick response. I am actually talking about lifting the top when the roof is fully retracted (i.e. open air driving).

On my 2005, I can try and lift up on the top and it is solidly latched down. I believe in 2006 BMW made a change where the top simply sits loosely on itself when fully retracted, and I just want to be sure before I take delivery of my '06 otherwise the dealer will probably give me a hard time in the future if I don't bring it up prior to delivery.

I have an 06 3.0si. When the top is down and 'locked', it is secured and will not lift when you tug on it. If I don't hold the button down long enough when lowering the top, it doesn't lock down and can be manually pulled up - and the red indicator will flash on the button console.

What he said. The motor will continue to churn for about 2-3 seconds after the top has reached full-down position, presumably to "lock" the roof into place.

Same for me - roof locks down and cannot be pulled up.

Excellent, thanks! I didn't think BMW would take that safety feature out of the equation. From what I understand, the '06+ models do not have the manual unlock feature of the '03-'05s, but thats the only difference I could find.

Just to confirm what I'm talking about, here's a quick video of what I mean:

Posted same on your video....mine is a 2006 Z4...checked it out...locked down and very secure. I'd ensure you get that fixed prior to taking ownership. Sounds like an issue with either locking mechanism or possible motor problem (might be a good chance to check out condition of motors as well).
