Brushed aluminum trim modification

Hey guys,
I was wondering if there was a way to stain the brushed aluminum trim on our cars to make it a darker (gunmetal if not completely black). I like the texture and grain of the brushed aluminum finish but would prefer it be darker.

Any insights would be much appreciated.

TIA

the color will looks more gunmetal in person.

I tried with the old DIY, completely useless. It's a total pain anyway. Instead, I paid a BMW specialist $60 to do the trim swap for me.

That 60 is totally worth every buck! Remove centre trim is 100%PITA.

Lol if you've read my thread about my VANOS problems you will know that I now believe that there is no such thing as a BMW specialist, at least not with Z4s.

I've been loosely following that, doesn't look like fun.

Back to OP's question. What about about a tinted "clear coat" layer sprayed on top? I have no idea if that would adhere well, but it's an idea.
