Wow. As above, do you have any details?

Mileage, frequency of oil changes, type of oil, pattern of use (e.g., waiting for oil temp to fully warm before hard acceleration), used oil analyses, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Just hit 80k miles, mostly city driving.

Usually change oil every ~4-5k, no revving while cold etc. Always used Castrol TWS, except maybe 20k ago I used the blue bottle “M TwinPower” whatever oil. Only 1 track day.

I did have an oil analysis done at 75k — lead was 30, copper was 3. Funny, because all 6 top bearings were down to copper

I was worried that the journal would be toast but there’s no scratches or anything. Lucky I guess!

WOW!!
Lead at 30 is extreme and should definitely been cause to stop driving until getting them done.

Was lead and copper within normal prior to the 75k analysis?

Damn that looks horrible. Are bearings something that need to be changed continuously throughout the car's life?

Do you think that may be a mfg defect in the bearing shell? What else would cause a chunk to go missing like that? Maybe a piece of metal is missing from another part of your engine, and it passed through the bearing and chewed it up? Glad it didn't go boom.

I don’t think it’s a defect, I have another that’s missing a piece too (although a lot smaller). I think these are just extremely worn and about to fail. All the top ones are bad.

Those bottom ones already classify as very bad.
Those top ones....they're extreme.

Have you plastigauged the old bearings to see what actual bearing play was the result?

Well I didn't sign up for this when I bought the Z4 back in 2011!

I researched the info back then and the major topics were taking care of the valve adjustments and/or inspection I/II.

I've been reading Salty's threads and others' about this issue. I'm thinking that these rod bearing problems just recently started happening more often as our cars are aging.

M3 guys have been dealing with this for a long time, I believe there was a “service action” (ahem recall) at one point. Sucks but it is what it is. The job isn’t actually all that complicated though, most of that front end can be dropped in one piece (pic below). I think I’ll be treating them as a PM item every 50k from now on. Better safe than sorry

This has been an issue since the beginning of production.
It goes back even further, here in europe we have had the euro s50 since the early-mid 90's and that has the same problem (not strange as it's its predecessor and very similar in build and performance).
Biggest problem back then (in the 90's) is that at that time there were no internet forums, so information on this was not spread around.
