Exhaust Hub Tab and Cam Gear Bolt Check a Must
For those who have not yet upgraded their Vanos or at least checked their exhaust hub tabs and cam gear bolts, I suggest you do so soon. I just upgraded the Vanos on my new to me 06 Z4MC and discovered 1 broken tab on the exhaust hub and all 6 Cam Gear bolts backed out, one completely sheared the others almost sheared.

I'm at 69K. At 13K you're probably fine unless you track it. I would recommend getting something like the Beisan pump disk, which is designed to prevent exhaust hub tabs from breaking. The hubs are not cheap, cost me over $800 for it. Did my own labor, so it wasn't so bad but the work is time consuming, mainly due to access and would be expensive for a shop to do it. I was lucky, the broken tab was stuck in the pump and the bolts hadn't fully backed out. Not doing anything can get real expensive.

Exhaust tab broke at about 75 k miles. Replaced the entire Vanos, timing chain guide, and rod bearings at about 125k mikes. Closing in on 175k miles. You need to drive yours more.

lone parent, business owner..... i barely have the time to sit down and catch a breath never mind driving a weekend car.... i'm just glad i've been able to keep it....
Sounds like even at these miles its worth looking into the vanos issues, alittle nervous to jump into it DIY but....... im always up for it, how difficult is this?? i can comfortably to the VC checks for reference.

Nope. Took it to Lang.
I can do a lot of stuff myself, but mostly up top. My garage is too low to install a lift, and I couldn't see doing the rod bearings on jackstands. You're local. Andrew told me he likes to do rod bearings.

Fingers crossed, my lead levels are still quite low, so I'm hoping that job stays far into the future. |

I'm having my Vanos rebuilt with the Beisan rattle kit, upper chain guide and upgraded pump disk this month. Also upgrading the cam bolts as well as a valve job. i will report back with the condition of the cam bolts and hub. Fingers crossed its okay! I bought my Z4MC last july with 41,900 miles, I have 43,700 on it now..
I'm also curious about the approximate cost of having the rod bearings done. I know that will need to be addressed down the road.. When I do the Vanos/Service I'm going to send an oil sample to Blackstone. Last edited by WhatTheFetch; 03-31-2018 at 04:14 PM.. |

Vanos overhaul isn’t difficult, especially with Beisan’s guide which is excellent. Rod bearings aren’t so tough either (even on jack stands ), but you’ll have to roll your own guide via TIS, E46 M3 forums, and the nice folks here
Depending on what tools etc you already have, you can DIY bearings for ~$8-900 iirc
