Care to hazard a guess as to who it is? Hints:
  • I'm the goofy looking one with the moustache.
  • He confirmed for me that his song "Janis" was indeed written about Janis Joplin; he was one of her first accompanists when she moved to San Francisco, and they later lived together for some time.
  • It's not Jorma (although he was also one of Janis' early accompanists).

Thanks again, and I'll keep 'em coming!

tbalutis,

That's a decent guess, given the Janis Joplin connection, but that ain't him. It's Country Joe McDonald (minus the Fish).

Country Joe was teaching a songwriting course at the Fur Peace Ranch on this particular weekend, plus he did a concert there that was very well attended--remarkably so, given how remote the location is. And, of course, he led us all in a round of the Fish Cheer, for old times sake.

I took an intermediate electric guitar course that weekend, with instructor G.E. Smith who was the lead guitarist and director of the Saturday Night Live Band for many years. As I think about it, I'm overdue for another Fur Peace weekend!

Well, I have to admit that I never would have guessed that the photo was Country Joe nor would I have guessed that he was as close to Janis as is reputed. I apologize for hijacking the thread, but this was a very interesting tangent, I must say!

Rick, somehow I missed your radar comment! Sorry.
Some of my heroes included Commodore Gilespie, and Admiral Paddon. My Father is now one too.
As my Father used to say, Too soon old. Too late smart.

Dave,

That's great (not to mention overdue)! I don't suppose you took any pictures on your day trips… (hint, hint)?

I'm now about halfway through your Dad's book, and it's fascinating. I've learned a lot about wartime life in the British Navy, including a few things that I've long wondered about. For example, when a battleship, destroyer, or cruiser fires its mammoth long-range guns, doesn't the rolling of the ship throw off the trajectory of the shells? Answer (per Mack): The electrical circuit to fire the shells would not be complete until the ship rolled to exactly horizontal, at which point a mercury switch would connect, thereby completing the circuit anywhere from 1 to 8 or 9 seconds after the gunnery team had pushed the button to fire!

imz4n,

Sounds like you've been around Ohio quite a bit! I'm glad my report brought back some good memories--although hiking around Hocking Hills in the wintertime might be a bit challenging.

Rick it makes me feel very happy you're reading MacK's book.

I remember my Father going to sea for a year, twice whenI was very young. Korean War...H.M.C.S. Magnificent, an aircraft carrier. Very small by U.S. standards. Scary watching the crew cast off. I was 4? I think. My Father told me I was "Man of the family" until he returned. I knew about war, and people died sometimes.

His nickname came from one middle name, MacKinnon, that I share.

Photos? I'll look.

There's a very dead bird hanging from the nest. And there's a sparrow nest within it too, underneath!

Legendary Motor Cars We visited with Wil from Denver, with his Wife, my Sister-In-Law. Some time ago he had a Shelby Mustang (when they were new!), and before that a Corvair with a Corvette engine within. Many, many other wonderful cars. Super 7....and the list goes on.
