PS the dealer quoted me 15 hours because they had to "take the front end of the car off"....I see you didn't need to do that. How did you accomplish all this without removing the cross member behind the rad shroud?

I replaced my exhaust hub without removing the front of the car or raising the engine. I just disconnected the hood release cable and moved it out of the way.
Can't see why they make a big deal about it. The only thing that stopped me from lifting it right out was the control valve sticking out of it (#1 below). Once you have the Vanos off the head, holding it in one hand, pop the control valve off with the other hand. Just don't drop it into the timing chain.

I want to do this as preventative maintenance. But I'm no mechanic. I've been around motors and completed some maintenance stuff but this would be deeper than anything I've ever done. The timing thing worries me though and is what is holding me back. Wish I had someone experienced like you had to look over my shoulder. I REALLY would like to dive into this task......
