2006 Z4M Roadster Brake Force Display
I have a US model of the said car and I'm trying to see if it has brake force display. Its completely standard.
Is this speed activated on braking? IE - it wouldn't work if I was stationary and pressed hard on the brake pedal. Just trying to see if my car has it as its something I've never been able to figure out. |

It has it, it only works when the car is moving and the brakes are hit in a way that triggers them, do a search and you can see some BMWs on tracks when they activate.

This video shows it pretty well, and it's pretty entertaining too.

BFD exists in our cars for sure, and you have to slam on the brakes for them to come on. They do not just blink during "normal" braking.
The feature may not be active out of the factory. If you need to enable it, it'll require some coding but it's not hard. You'll find it in the LSZ under the features with prefix "BFD_".

Yeah I suppose I've only really ever progressively pressed on the brake pedal. I'm paying enough attention to the flow of traffic to have never needed to use evasive braking.
So the general consensus is that this is a standard feature on all US cars? I really want to get in to the coding stuff. I've had a look around NCS Dummy and Expert and can't get my head around it. I know its probably not that difficult, but it just seems like there isn't that much readily available information available. Don't suppose anyone would be willing to give me a brief overview? |

Here in San Diego we call the Brake Force Display, which is standard on quite a few BMWs besides the Z4 M Roadster, the "Oh shit!" lights. It's quite apparent at the local autocrosses put on by the San Diego Chapter of the BMW CCA, where hard braking is pretty normal. Also apparent at track events, particularly at the end of a straight.
My 2006 Z4 M Roadster has it, my wife's 2011 335is Coupe has it, and my 2016 M4 Coupe has it. On the M4 Coupe, the Brake Force Display lights can be coded to quickly flash on and off when they are triggered. I'm told that I have a pretty impressive light show going on at the end of the straights at our local tracks.
