Awesome to see a little hidden mode like this found, especially considering the car has been out of production for 6 years now. Love the idea that we're not 'done' with the z4m platform
I can't help but think it differs from the M3 mode mentioned, though. My thinking is, why would BMW not enable this feature? I'm going to go with the 'intended for non-M' camp and that BMW did not need to reprogram things but rather deactivate that mode for the M models.

The "M Track mode" does allow for a little more drift before intervening than with the DSC enabled. There are several MK60.C20 coding differences between the M and non-M. For instance, "DIFFERENTIAL LOCKING CONTROL" is aktiv on a non-M while it is non-aktiv on the M. I believe this is for the electronic LSD for the non-M. I attached the M and non-M trace file differences for review. E85-MK60.C20-TraceDifferences.txt From what I've been reading the biggest difference would be in wet conditions where it allows much more rear end drifting while still saving you from getting completely sideways. A wet track comes to mind. Or unfamiliar road or track until you know what/where the grip is. Much more information can be found in this thread over at m3forum.net where they have also enabled M tack mode on their M3s that use the same Mk60.C20 module. |

- the diff lock option is very interesting, it definitely adds more to the M track mode speculation. Thanks for posting the other comparo differences. I will definitely be giving this a try when the car comes out of hybernation.

I now get the DTC light with one push. Next track day is on the 18th, will update then.

Track mode programmed and tested.!
For anyone that tracks their M, this is easily one of the best things you can do to improve the car. We did the coding on my and Caddyshk's car. We were both out to a track day on the 18th and had an absolute blast. Conditions were dry and hot (28c) the track itself was a touch on the slick side This track was new to us so we did the first track session in the normal 'nanny' mode to get a feel for things. The cars behaved in the usual fashion of flashing slip light and cutting throttle tracking out through the apex and up the track until the nanny was happy and gave the throttle back. The second session we engaged track mode and were absolutely amazed at the difference in the car. No flashing slip light, throttle was right there allowing throttle steering. Tracking out past the apex with throttle was fantastic, the feel you have for the dynamics of car in your butt and hands was a HUGE improvement. The nice thing is that there is still yaw control logic in place. I have tracked my car with 'systems' off before and have experienced how this car can bite you with snap oversteer. With this track mode you can feel that yaw control is still there, but it's not invasive. (it also won't save you from the laws of physics if you do something stupid) It's mind blowing to me that BMW didn't make this available to us from the start. Over the years I have done a lot to improve track performance of this car, I can easily say that nothing compares to the improvement that this simple bit of coding has made. If you track your car with nanny engaged, get this done ASAP you will love it!

Thanks for the update InTgr8r. I'm really interested in doing this mod.
I've an intermediate driver and leave the DSC on at the track. I've driven with it off and a couple times i ran out of skill. I prefer to keep it on. But the yellow blinking light is very disruptive (mostly understeer for me) Question: With DTC mode on did you push it hard enough for the nannies to kick in? If you did a) are there visual indicators? yellow flashing light? b) how far did it let you go before reeling you in? For me I like how DSC lets you get some slight oversteer but still saves my butt when i need it. But I absolutely hate what it does with understeer. It is way too invasive. |

Understeer/oversteer is all in the car setup and driving technique. The description from BMW for track mode is very good "M track mode is a feature of the Dynamic Stability Control DSC, designed for driving on dry roads. It allows you to drive with higher longitudinal and lateral acceleration, whereas driving stability is somewhat reduced. Only in its absolute limit will the system try to stabilize the vehicle by reducing engine power and applying brakes to the wheels. Under these driving conditions the driver must be prepared to perform corrective steering movements if necessary." I didn't get the car out of shape to the point that the system noticeably intervened.

Thanks for adding some more detail.
To clarify, I was not expecting this new mode to prevent understeer. I will still get understeer if I continue to take the turn (#5 at NJMP-L) the way i do. What I dont like is when I dont have enough front grip is that the nannies kick in and cut the power dramatically. I have to back off throttle to slow down, wait for grip to return, then get back on the throttle. I'm all for changing my driving style so this doesnt happen, but when it does I dont want to be penalized too much. |

Yes, OK. Understood.
I think this coding will also help getting a better feel for what the car is doing so that you as the driver are making improvements. I found that when full nanny mode is making inputs to car control as well as your own, it masks feel to the driver so that it inhibits your learning. In track mode you get better feedback for your inputs.

On my non-M Z4 I always drive with DTC mode on. I find the normal traction control way to be way too aggressive and it engages too often. It even gets in the way when quickly pulling into traffic. But I don't want to completely disable it.
But if this can be truly enabled on the ///M it should be a nice medium between 'omg stop it you stupid car' and 'lets wrap the tail end around a tree'.

This is awesome! I have been driving on track with DSC off for a few years now mostly because of throttle cut on track out. Would be nice to try this intermediate mode; especially since I have been tracking a TT (3.2 & now RS) for two years and developed some bad habits
Anyone in NJ with the tool to change this? I will be in town first week of December and you get a 6 pack for coding this up. |

Great find, I start off in DTC for all my track days and switch to DSC off once re-familiarize myself with the course. Also great to use when your tires are still cold during hose first few laps!

I tracked a 2012 Boss 302 for a time and it had the track mode setting, a perfect balance between Fun-wrecker-nanny and OH $hitt! This sounds great. I don't have the hardware, patients nor skill to do this my self. Do you think a dealership will do this for me?

I'm pretty sure a dealer can't do this, and even if they could, they probably wouldn't unless know someone. You'll need an independent that can use NCSExpert, or just buy the $15 cable and do it yourself.

If anyone is willing to put up a tutorial for us neophytes, It would be greatly appreciated.
I have searched several blogs for NCSExpert. The tutorials I found look very complicated, several software downloads, etc. I'll be looking to find someone in the Michigan area that has the knowledge, software and hardware to do this for me. Last edited by Bossdog; 12-22-2015 at 09:21 PM.. |
