3.0si Sound Generator? What is it?

I keep seeing stuff about removing foam from the sound generator, what is the sound generator? I guess you make your car pretty loud by removing this foam?

Sorry for the ignorance. Thanks.

Engine noise from under hood is piped into the cabin through a hose with foam in it passing through the firewall
Removing the foam increases the amount of sound you hear in the cabin
I believe only the non M models have it.

Got it. Thank you.

How much does removing the foam increase the noise to those outside the car?

No sound increase outside the car just into the cabin
The noise is the induction sound from the filter box iirc

For some reason this reminds me of the bit from Maxwell Smart where Stakker is going "vroom vroom" while pretending to ride a motorcycle and Zigfried says " Stakker, zees ees KAOS, we don't vroom vroom here".
