DISA Failure? Rough Idle + Rattle (coming from DISA)

So i thought i could go at least one month without any problems.... i was wrong.

On my way in to work this morning I was sitting at a red light and my rpms were just bouncing around, idle was really rough.... i barely put my foot on the gas to accel slowly and i can hear a rattling noise from the engine bay. I pulled over and popped the hood and the rattling noise is coming from the DISA (or in the general area of the DISA). Its a crackle/rattle/ticking noise and all i can think of is the DISA is failing. Im at work and do not have any tools with me. Im prob going to go ahead and order one through my fathers shop so i have a new one by the time i get home just in case that is the problem.

I have a 22mi drive home and I hope it will be fine if i baby it home. Any suggestions on what this might be other than the DISA?

DISA Failure wouldnt cause a rough idle. In fact you can take the butterfly out and the car would run fine. As long as the electronics are plugged in you should be good. The rough idle is most likely caused by the IDLE REGULATING VALVE. See number 8 in the illustration.

Oh you can fix the rough idle by taking it out and cleaning it. It usually gets really gunked up and stuck open or closed.

replaced the DISA and the car ran great! no idle issues.... THe shaft that runs inside the flap was broke at the base... and yes the broken DISA flap was causing the rough idle.

The flap was freely opening and closing at idle because it was just hanging there...

What is a DISA and will the Z4M have this? My car has an identical problem. Rattling from the front end and then on my drive to BMW to have it looked at, started shaking and idling really rough. At higher revs seems to smoothen out but will not accelerate hard.

Makes sense?

yep! same exact symptoms.... DISA is #7 on the diagram that was posted above... id get that replaced ASAP. if the pin falls out, its catastrophic. dont let anyone tell you that the pin can't fall out either because it has happened before and if it does.. time for a new engine.

My Disa went too. Its $400 at the stealerships, but I went on www.car-part.com and searched for an intake manifold for our cars. Then for the ones that DID have it, I emailed them and asked if they could sell me just the Disa valve. Sure enough, I got one for $150.

I pulled the DISA out of the Roadster last June and cleaned it.

My rattling noise only happened when I went over uneven surfaces. Not constant. Car is still at the shop, they can't figure it out. Will inform them to check the DISA.

Got my DISA for $197 at the dealership (wholesale) Its REAL easy to install.....

arobyte the 2 most common issues that cause the rattle is the VANOS or DISA. have them check both... the O-Rings in the Vanos could be bad but it really sounds to me like the DISA Valve.

To check the DISA, just pull the electrical cable to the DISA. If the rattling stops, there you go. That is the way I have seen most others figure out the issue.

The DISA failed on my X5 during our Christmas trip back east. We were in the boonies of western PA, 50 miles from the nearest dealer. Same symptoms, very rough idle and rattling noise. I managed to limp it to the dealer who did not have the part in stock. Being the day before Xmas, I wasn't going to wait for it to come in. The just bypassed it somehow and it ran fine until we got home. Then all hell broke loose with a failed oil separator, but that's another story.

unless the shaft is broke inside the flap like mine... the rattle will continue because its just freely hanging there... no tension in the flap. I did try this when i had mine break.

They say there is an air leak somewhere in the engine. Trying to narrow it down now.

i see the regulating valve in the diagram above, but can't seem to find it under the hood. Am i just blind? or is it tucked away/inside somewhere?
