straight pipes or mufflers delete
Is running straight pipes or deleting the mufflers bad for our S54 engine? I was told by Muffin Muffler (silly name I know) that NA engines need back pressure else we will lose a lot of power. I was going to delete the muffler and drive it for a week or two before shelling out the money to do straight pipes w/ tips. What are yall thoughts on this?

Besides being loud enough to get you a ticket, you will loose power with a stock setup.

If you have a ESS tune, you probably did not lose it down low either. Without a tune, you probably did lose some low end torque.

Yeah but I wonder if RPI will require software with their muffler delete to no lose power? I hope they can but they have been working on that muffler nearly 29 years

Do yall think I can remove the muffler and run it as is without pushing too much heat under the car? Or do I need to pipe to the rear / down pipe?

you should be good. i had mine off for week and it was fine. it sounds pretty different from straight pipes. straight pipes tone it down a bit (just short of out of control) i wouldnt leave them off for long though.

had the muffler delete done regardless of what others said...w/o a tune I actually gained a car length with my friends 335i v3 100 oct tune...and now he beats me by only a car and a half. so top end gains are definitely there but so are the low end losses. I get nothing but compliments on the noise...almost tubi ferrari esque <--blasphemy, I know but it has that hollow throatiness that I am sooo addicted to. not to mention it only takes 10 min to replace the factory muffler

Yeah i doubt that running straight pipes would be bad performance wise. Mainly since back pressure is a big myth, but correctly sized pipes are still needed for proper exhaust scavaging to take place. And also because removing any restrictions and greater flow will help top end the rest can be tuned out.
I also think we could gain heaps more power with a properly designed race header. All the ones ive seen look like they have piss poor merge collectors which would just ruin any gains the header would have. If we could get some one to design one using some Burns collectors or similar quality that would be awesome.
