iPhone won't connect via bluetooth

OK, I have been searching for the answer all night. I have an iPhone 4s and am trying to pair it with my 2006 Z4 M Roadster with the mk4 Nav but no luck. Here is what I have tried (numerous times)...

As per the manual, key in 1 position (have also tried 2) and the Telephone screen on the nav display says "searching". It comes up on the iPhone (BMW123456 or whatever) so the phone is seeing the car. I click it and enter the PK code (from the card supplied). I immediately get an error that says to make sure the car is in pair mode and that I have the right PIN. Obviously the car can be seen by the phone or it wouldn't show up. As an aside, as soon as I turn the ignition off and take the key out, the BMW123456 disappears from the phone so I KNOW the phone sees the car.

I tried resetting network connections on the phone and even tried my wife's iPhone, all to no avail. I am therefore convinced that the car is not allowing itself to be paired.

I have read some steps for other BMWs and head units that talk about holding the R/T button or various other methods but none of them are mentioned in the manual that I have. As a foot note, my phone paired just fine with my old 2008 Z4 3.0i.

Can someone help me here? I am at a loss.

Thanks

I'd double check that PK code - possibly the code stored in the TCU doesn't match what you have on the card. You can either do that through software or get it from the label on the TCU, but reading from the TCU directly would be the best bet - if there's a mismatch the label would be suspect as well.

Can be very frustrating, I know. Try this. Worked for me. Got it from
michaelw9 on bimmerfest

1) Turn car on but not the engine on (position doesn't matter)
2) Press the R/T button just once
3) Radio says "Activate (pause) Phone (pause) Activate (pause) Phone" ...
4) Go to your phone, Do search for new device
5) Phone will find BMW##### (last 5 = last 5 of VIN)
6) Pair, follow directions for your phone, etc

The radio will never ever say "Bluetooth Pairing" as the manual tells you it will. You don't have to hold anything for any number of seconds.

Thanks for the tip, though it didn't work for me. Not sure if the BT on the nav based systems are different but I didn't have any flashing Activate-Phone.

In terms of the PK code, I will pull the back carpet and look tomorrow, though since I do have the original card, I can't see how it could be different but its worth a look.

I believe I've read in some BMW coding forums that it is possible to change the PK code. If you read the code off of the TCU and it matches what you have been using perhaps the previous user changed the code (just a wild ass guess, in case you can't solve this). A dealer or someone with BMW coding software could check the code for you

Solved it!

Good tip elerner61...I guess this teaches us never to believe the info provided...

The programming card that was in with the manual when I got the car said the pk was 0042. Why would that be wrong??? I took elerner61's advice and got in behind tonight, though didn't feel like taking the battery out to get the carpet all the way up (this was WAY easier on the 3.0i with the battery down below). I would have had to get the carpet all the way up to get at the top bolt on the bluetooth module bracket so I just took off the two lower ones and was able to move the housing out enough to get a mirror and light behind. What did I find??? pk:0304. Bastards........

I knew something was fishy when I went to loosen the two plastic "bolts" that hold the left side of the back carpet together with the side piece and found them missing. Someone has been back there before!

Anyway, all works fine now. Coincedentally, this pk code is the same as my 3.0i's was. I wonder if there is a limited number of pk's that they use.

Mystery solved.

Did you ask for a manual with the car.
Maybe they lifted it out of another Z4 fo you.

Its strange...I bought it from a Toyota used dealership (though they own a BMW dealership as well) but I didn't ask for any manuals...they were in the trunk the first time I saw the car. Maybe there had been a TCU issue at some point and it was replaced...who knows.

The problem here is that you're trying to use Dalek tech with BMW tech. That's not a good idea. It might result in the Bluetooth module or the ECU being exterminated.

J/K. Good luck. A scanner like PA Soft or Bav Tech would allow you to read the actual Bluetooth code (if you have access to one), and even reset it.

On a side note, I can pair mine Iphone, and get it to dial, but I think the microphone is kaput as I can hear folks answer but they can't hear me. (But I have such little use of the phone in the Z4 that I'm too lazy to fix it.)

Did you update the OS? Can't get it to reconnect? What exactly is it not doing?

+1. You may also want to try and pair another phone just to see if that's possible. If a second phone does pair then you know the car technology is ok. You can then try and pair your iPhone all over again (may have to delete it first)

On the odd occasion I have had to hold my iPhone 4s virtually against the dash in discover mode. I have noticed that sometimes BT devices have to be real close together to pair the first time. Put the phone right next to the dash in the radio area - this is what finally worked for me.
