Piston Coating

Hello All,

About to pull the trigger on a 3.5L Lang Racing stroker to complete the spiral into NA madness.

So far the motor has the following mods:
-RPI Scoop
-Turner under drive pulleys
-Evolve Airbox
-Schrick 288/280 cams
-Fabspeed Headers
-DKF section 1 running w/o cats
-RPI cans
-VAC high capacity oil pump
-Epic Tune

motor makes 334 SAE corrected WHP on Dynojet (349 uncorrected here in Boston)

Anyway, we've been saving our pennies this year, in anticipation of the final piece of the puzzle.

Any thoughts on Swaintech coating for pistons?
I was likely going to have the headers and possibly section 1 sent off for coating already

My hesitation was that this was not going to add to the longevity to the motor, and may cause clearance issues with the piston skirts. Maybe for a FI motor it makes sense, but not sure it will add anything to NA.

I was under the impression the stock pistons are already graphite coated...

Does the new motor include other pistons?

The Lang kit uses CP pistons, which are not coated.

Ask Andrew. He knows more about building race cars than all of us combined.

I did speak to someone over at Lang about it, (not sure it was Andrew or not), he wasn't sure it added much benefit overall. My thought is that there are numerous piston manufacturers that will supply coated pistons for race purposes, and knowing that the S54 already has one of the highest piston speeds for a production motor, it may make sense to add some protection from friction / heat given the stroke, and therefore piston speed will increase further.
