deal for a new 08?
strolling through my local dealership when i found a "new" 08 Z4 3.0si sitting on the lot. i forgot to ask how many miles were on the clock but i know it was a bmw executive car and they were offering it for 39k-40k. msrp is 56k. yay or nay ona good deal? i was thinking about offering 25k tax not included but something tells me thats low balling, even if it is the older looking model. Thanks!
btw, how is the performance on the 3.0si anyway? i've never considered the Z4 before (been trying to look for deals on the 335i and the M3 all year long) edit: its new in the sense that its never been registered before. |

I wouldn't do it. You can get a slightly used Z4M roadster for 10k less.

You can get a 19k-mile '06 Z4M-roadster with hardtop and aero side skirts for $27k~28k if you're willing to fly to Seattle and drive it home. It's my old car that I traded in 8 months ago and it's now sitting at a VW dealer (the BMW dealer sold it to VW at auction).

As a reference, when I was shopping a couple years ago, year old 3.0si "executive" cars were going with asking prices in the $36-38k range; an 08 is now two model years old so would have that much more depreciation on it. Additionally there has been a major redesign in the interim, so it's not likely to be a big seller for them now. Exec cars often have 5-10k miles on them and can be ones that were damaged in shipping beyond the disclosure limits and repaired (which isn't to say it still can't be a good deal, depending upon what was damaged.)
$25k probably is low balling a bit, depending upon its mileage and history, but 30ish would not be out of line as a starting point - after all, they're "hi-balling" it to see what sticks. Of course, if it really is "new"ish with only a couple hundred miles on it, it could be worth more - again, depending upon whether or not it has any damage/repairs in its history. One of the guys on these boards bought a new (not exec) 07 coupe for $32k (+T&L) in SoCal as the 08s were coming out, though it was a fairly basic one rather than a fairly loaded one like you are considering. As to its performance, it is comparable to the 335i, maybe a touch slower to a stopwatch - it doesn't have as much torque or power, but neither does it have as much weight. More importantly is that it is of very different character - a lighter more tossable roadster (or coupe) with much more of a sportscar feel than that of a sporty coupe/sedan (albeit a very quick one.) At this point, the car has been kicking around for a year or more and someone wants it sold. The price comes down to how much longer the dealer is willing to wait to find a prospective customer willing to buy it. It seems like you have been patiently looking for a deal, so you can go ahead and make them an offer and walk away - let them call you back on it. |

If an high up at BMW wanted to drive a car, they'd choose any on the lot and drive it for a week. If the car has more than 1k miles on it, it was a loaner. |

Go to autotrader.com and compare. I would think you could get an '08 M with low miles and warranty (+CPO?) for that kind of money. If you get a one owner from a BMW enthusiast and it has been serviced regularly, garaged, etc., I wouldn't be afraid of a used one. Some of these used cars look better, and are better maintained than the factory cars.

You should feel safe buying a CPO, or a car with 2+ years of factory warranty left. You can pay $125 at any BMW service center to have them check out a used car in its entirety. |
