I just had my lifters etc. replaced three weeks ago for this problem. The parts had to come from Germany and the car was in the shop for three weeks since the mechanic advised not to drive the car with the problem. I had a nice new loaner, but three weeks without my car was a bit much. Since the work the engine has been nice and quiet and seems to pull better. In addition the mileage has gone up.

My 2006 3.0 Si exhibits no sign of the ticking problem. The car is in storage right now so I can't go out and start 'er up to check.

My car has about 19,000 miles on it. Does this problem typically occur at around a particular mileage, or could it happen any time in the car's life?

I find it interesting that your mechanic/dealer said that you should not drive the car while it is incurring the problem while many others on this and other message boards say that the issue is not serious and causes no harm to the engine. As has been stated by most people who have had the problem, once you drive a few miles at 3k rpm or higher, the problem usually goes away so if any harm is being done, it must be while the car is warming up.

Just got a call from BMW Service, and they have replaced my cylinder head. This is after replacing the lifters previously. I'll post comments after I go get her later today to see if the irritating ticking is gone now.

I was a bit worried that they couldn't reproduce the problem this time, as the ticking was definitely there, but only seemed to be bad during cold weather. It had warmed up in Texas by the time I put the car back in the shop, to the point that the noise was not as bad. Anyway, I'm sure the mechanics ears are more sharp and heard the issue loud and clear. Hopefully they're not just telling me they fixed it and not fixing it, hoping for a placebo effect.

I got my lifters replaced last week and for the first 3-4 days, everything was wonderful--even when the engine was cold. Then on Sunday morning, I went to the health club which is only a mile from my house--not far enough to really warm up the engine. When I arrived, I heard the dreaded tick-tick-tick-tick...... I couldn't believe it. I'm going to keep an eye (and ear) on it for a couple of weeks and see if it comes back but right now, I'm not sold that replacing only the lifters with the new, re-designed ones is a permanent fix for this problem.

I don't know... I still say this is not anything serious. The "fixes" are done if you complain enough to the dealer, and don't really seem to change much.

It's now late January, and I've only had one instance of this happening so far this winter. The ol' "italian tune-up" always does the trick for me. Several miles of high rpms and I'm good to go.

Seems like the short drives are what's causing this more than a flawed design. I have a 13 mile commute each way so perhaps that's helping me out.

I am no mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but have done a lot of research on difference message boards on this issue. From what I can gather it is a problem with the cylinder head and check valves that allow oil to drain from around the lifters..not a problem with the lifters themselves. Most successful solutions I have read of involved a change of the cylinder head. Just my 2 cents. Hope it is helpful.

Drove it home yesterday and this morning to work, and the engine is quiet, and I can hear only normal valve sounds. I'll take it for a spin in the noontime, which is when the noise was worst (cold start up in day, and then restart after a few hours, but before the engine is cold).

Now on a side note, the idler valve (I would guess) is not managing the cold start idle correctly, and sometimes the engine is close to dying.

I'm glad I bought the car with CPO now.

Just drove the car around. Still had bad cold startup idle issue (unrelated to valves). Otherwise, engine sounds good. I'll report back if the issue comes back. I'm crossing my fingers I'm in the clear now with the new head.

The dreaded ticking returned yesterday after having the litters replaced a few months ago Looks like it's back to the dealer for the head replacement.

Same thing happened to me--only my "new" lifters only lasted about a week before they started makling noise again. Once I got the new head installed, everything has been great. By the way, when they replace the head, it comes pre-assembled with new valves, camshafts and the rest of the top-half of the engine. Although this adds cost to the repair, I'm sure it eliminates a lot of the labor necessary during the installation. My SA said the installation is pretty simple now with the pre-assembled hardware.

As I mentioned above, I'm very happy with the way my engine runs now. It is as smooth as any BMW engine I've ever heard. I drove an M coupe last month and actually prefer the sound and feel of my engine to the M. It may not have the torque and horsepower but it's got plenty for what I need and it sounds better to me.

I'll give BMW another chance. I've owned Nissan, Ford, Honda, Mazda but the last two have been BMW's.....my current z4 and a 2004 330xi. Nothing has come close to the road connection.

In my case, about one week after I dropped it off. I think it took more time to get the head than to replace it.

Once the new head came in and I took my car in, they had it done in 3 days.

Just got the call from the Dealer, the car ticked this morning when they started it after sitting all weekend. They contacted BMW NA and they authorized a head replacement. The head will be here this week and the car goes in next Monday to get the head replaced. They said about 3 days to replace the head. Hopefully it'll run better than new when it comes back.

Mine has never ticked, but if it's ever going to I wish it would already. I have 49K on the car and if it finally starts to do this at 50,001 miles I'll be really annoyed.
