It wasn't from the VANOS. I'm just stating that if you hear any unusual noise from the engine, don't assume it's from this TSB. I believe the OP mentioned in another thread that one of the dealership claimed that the noise was normal...similar to this tsb.

Theres 2 other people here who have suffered the same idiocy from the dealer.
my guy is a detail nut... i'm confident he'll nail it tuesday. today he came in for a few hours just for me... so he was pressed for time. trust me, this is the guy i want on my car... a tech nerd!

Hey, that's not fair, I didn't hear any rattling in my car before it died down.
My 2 screws actually snapped in half.

And like I said, I was going through a drive through at the golden arches.

mine was at 13000 KM when it happened and an 06... as you know already.

So 2006's get your screws checked

The shop foreman told me that the s54 engines have many issues... and he's seen his fair share of m3's going into the dealer.

apparently there was another z4m in Toronto... blue that was in the dealer getting fixed before I dropped my car in for the 2nd.. 3rd.... time... and that owner was pssst... that's what I heard.

I just don't get psst that easily... wish I could....

Who miss timed your car and then started it up and drove it? Try to recognize the blind faith in the face of evidence to the contrary. You might think I'm a dick for saying it but it's a fact, anyone who reassembles the valve cover with incorrect timing is not fit to preform the work, BMWs tools make it VERY obvious that it is timed wrong (it's precision machined and wont lay flat if it's off and the TIS specifically says make SURE its flat or don't run the car) but the techs just ignore it and say "close enough". Your guy is one of them unfortunately, not matter how much faith you have in him.

Aren't there a lot of E46 M3s that have 100K miles or more without major problems, as well as a number that have been flogged numerous times at the track without problems? I thought that the S54 was a pretty reliable engine overall, after the rod bearing problems were sorted out.

Is there a TSB on replacing the bolts, specifically?
Basically what paperwork are you using to get the dealer to swap the bolts ?
or are you just paying for the work to get peace of mind?

thx
RC
