Which sound system do I have in my zzzz?

There are 3 soundsystems available for the Z4.

Standard audio: 6 speakers, no subwoofers, no speakers in the doors
Hifi: 10 speakers (including 2 subwoofers)
Top Hifi: upgraded 10 speakers (including 2 Carver technology woofers)

All speakers are made by Philips. The “Carver” woofers are also made by Philips but rumours are that they were designed by Bob Carver like his Sunfire woofer series.

The woofers in the Hifi system have an impedance of 2 ohms
The woofers in the Top Hifi system have an impedance of 10 ohms

All speakers have got a good efficiency (dB/W/m), so keep in mind that in most cases when you replace them with aftermarket ones, the sound pressure level will suffer.

The amp on the Hifi and Top Hifi system is located next to the battery in the trunk.

Top Hifi (also called Premium Audio or Carver):

The Top-HiFi audio system consists of following components:
• Radio Business-CD or CID
• Top-HiFi amplifier
• Front left and right low-range speakers (woofers)
• Front left and right high-range speakers (tweeters)
• Front left and right mid-range speakers
• Rear left and right mid-range speakers
• Rear left and right low-range speakers (woofers) in Carver technology
• CD changer (optional)

Top-HiFi Amplifier
With regard to its functionality, the Top-HiFi amplifier corresponds to the previous DSP
amplifier as already used in other model series. The special features on the E85 are the two high voltage output stages (30 V) for the Carver woofers.
The Top-HiFi amplifier has 2 analogue inputs (left and right). In addition, the Top-HiFi amplifier
features a digital input for the CD changer connection (coaxial cable). This arrangement
achieves a higher signal quality.
The top HiFi amplifier is installed in the luggage compartment next to the vehicle battery.

Front low-range speaker (woofer)
The woofer has a diameter of 160 mm and a paper cone. The maximum load capacity is
50 W. The woofers (low-range speakers) cover a frequency range from 50 Hz to 500 Hz.
The front woofers (low-range speakers) are mounted at the bottom in the A-pillars on the
left and right.

High-range speakers (tweeters)
The tweeter has a diameter of 26 mm and a fabric cap or calotte. The maximum load
capacity is 25 W. The tweeter (high-range speaker) covers a frequency range from 4000 Hz
to 20,000 Hz.
The frequency range of the high-range speaker is set by means of a capacitor.

The tweeter (high-range speaker) is located in a panel mounted in the mirror triangle.
The output direction of the tweeter is directed at the head area of the occupant opposite.
The tweeter (high-range speaker) is based on a sealed design.
Mid-range speaker
The mid-range speaker has a diameter of 100 mm and an aluminum cone. The maximum
load capacity is 50 W. The mid-range speaker covers a frequency range from 100 Hz to
10,000 Hz. The front and rear mid-range speakers are identical.
The front mid-range speakers are fitted in the doors. The rear mid-range speakers are
installed in the partition behind the seats.

Carver woofers (low-range speakers), rear
The Carver woofers have a diameter of 160 mm and a paper cone in Carver technology.
The maximum load capacity is 100 W. The Carver woofers cover a frequency range from
30 Hz to 150 Hz.
The rear Carver woofers are accommodated in the partition behind the seats. The resonance
volume is approx.10 l.

Carver Woofer Operating principle:







High sound pressure is required for achieving a rich bass. The Carver woofers (low-range
speakers) produce this sound pressure with their small diameter by increasing the
displacement of the diaphragm. The sound pressure is produced by movement in the volume
of air.
The volume of air moved is derived from the diaphragm area multiplied by the displace-
To date to achieve this, the largest possible diaphragm area (diameter of the speaker)
was used in conjunction with relatively low displacement (approx. 3-10 mm). A matching
resonance volume is additionally required.
In vehicle construction applications, this technology leads to a conflict between vehicle
design and vehicle equipment: Due to the design and comprehensive level of equipment,
there is little package space available for large bass speakers.
Carver technology represents a new approach in solving this problem. Thanks to Carver
technology, a high sound pressure is produced with a small speaker diameter by increasing
the diaphragm displacement (approx. 30 mm).
Due to the greater diaphragm displacement Carver woofers (low-range speakers) require a
higher voltage supply than conventional speakers.
A special DSP amplifier with high voltage output stages (30 Vrms) is required for the Top-
HiFi audio system. It is necessary to greatly increase the magnetic force in order to achieve
greater diaphragm displacement. The solenoid was adapted accordingly. A high magnetic
force also means that a high back emf is produced in the solenoid (back emf Uemf=B.l.v).
The back emf counteracts the output voltage of the amplifier thus reducing the effective
voltage at the solenoid.
It is not possible to operate Carver speakers with the amplifiers (radio output stages 6 Vrms)
previously used.

The signal from the headunit is send by the K-bus to the amp. This is a digital signal. Because of this, it is not possible to use an aftermarket HU together with Top Hifi/Hifi amp.


HiFi System:
The HiFi audio system consists of following components:
• Radio Business-CD or CID
• HiFi amplifier
• Front left and right low-range speakers (woofers)
• Front left and right high-range speakers (tweeters)
• Front left and right mid-range speakers
• Rear left and right low-range speakers (woofers)
• Rear left and right mid-range speakers
• CD changer (optional)
HiFi amplifier
The HiFi amplifier is designed as an analogue 10-channel amplifier. The 4 input channels
are divided via frequency gates and equalizing filters over 10 channels. The HiFi amplifier is installed in the luggage compartment trough next to the vehicle battery.
The output power is:
• Low-range 4x40 W
• High range/mid-range 6x25 W
The channels are divided over a 3-way speaker system at the front and a 2-way speaker
system at the rear.

Low-range speakers (woofers)
The front woofers (low-range speakers) are mounted at the bottom in the A-pillars on the
left and right. The woofers are arranged transversely with respect to forward direction.
The resonance volume is approx.10 l and utilizes a part of the sill area.
Rear woofers are additionally installed in the partition behind the seats.

volume is approx. 2 l.

The signal from the headunit is send by the K-bus to the amp. This is a digital signal. Because of this, it is not possible to use an aftermarket HU together with Top Hifi/Hifi amp.

Standard audio

This system has got NO separate amplifier. It uses the same speakers as the Hifi system except that it lacks the subwoofers behind the seats and the midrange speakers in the doors. Resulting in a 6 speaker system.

There are no wires present in the doors to add the midrange speakers. You must run the wiring thru the connectors inside the door.




Partnumbers for the original mid range speakers:

100mm paper coned crap-range 100 hz up to 15000 hz. Maximum load: 25W
part# 65-13-6-950-131 (Hifi). About 25€

Top Hifi system :

100mm alu coned 100 hz up to 10000 hz. Max load: 50W
part# 65-12-6-915-838 (Top Hifi). About 35€

Personal mods

My zzzz came with the Standard audio system.

IMHO it lacks clarity, detail and good stereo front stage… so I started to work.

I replaced my headunit with Pioneers DEH-P77MP. Capable of playing mp3/wma. It has got a real brushed alu finish. Works good together with my alu trim.




To use a normal headunit you need the 1 DIN bezel, which you can get from your stealer for about 50€. Part# 65-90-0-301-349.

Here is a pic of the mid range of the Focal's 165KP composet. They need an aftermarket amp to perform well.



This is a two way system, meaning 1 6.5" midbass driver goes in the footwells and 1 1" tweeters goes...euh well... where the tweeter goes. A so called "crossover network" is used to feed each driver with the correct frequencyrange (midbass<3.5khz<tweeter)



This is the Focal titanium dome TN45 tweeter. Older versions of alu dome tweeters produced a harsh sound on the “S” in the lyrics, but this is history. I prefer these tweeters over silk dome version because of their excellent clarity and detail.

Put a bipolair condensator over the rear mid speakers. This prevents that frequencies of less then 400hz are sent to these speakers. Adjust fader for optimal front stage.

Power comes from 2 Helix HXA20 MK II amps which are mounted vertically on the back of the trunk.




If you are keeping your stock headunit and want to combine it with an aftermarkt amp (or ampS), you'll need at least 2 high level input/low level output adapters to convert the amplified signal from the headunit (speaker out connections) to a low level input signal for the amp.

No cutting required, all the adapters can be bought in a car hifi shop.



The antenna connector is of the "VW" type Shocked and an adapter is available at your car hifi shop.

Now..., the bass!

Because I didn't want to give up any trunk space, I did not put a wooferbox in my trunk... Instead, I optimized the cabinets where the Carver woofers would be (or the storage compartment if you have got the "simple" hifi system).

For my Morel Elate 6 6.5" midbass woofers, the cabinets are completely SEALED and filled with Dacron fibre. I did some calculations to make the cabinet perfect for the driver. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! A driver in a wrongfully (does this word exist?) designed cabinet (sealed or opened, the so called Bass-reflex) or wrong internal volume WILL NOT WORK.

All this can be calculated with a nifty little tool, WinISD, which you can get for free from www.linearteam.dk You will need the drivers Thiele and Small parameters Rolling Eyes

I used MDF 12mm to fabricate the mounting plates. Bolt them airtight using the oem holes. Afterwards screw in the speaker.

This works VERY GOOD;

Overall very good value for money: Kenwood KFCWDA69RC. Comes with one 100 watt Class D mono amp and a little wired remote. VERY IMPORTANT: these woofers need a bass reflex cabinet!! I just didn't seal the "hole" that is in the cabinet towards the trunk. Sounded very good for the price. No Dacron fibre is needed.

The signal from the headunit is send by the K-bus to the amp. This is a digital signal. Because of this, it is not possible to use an aftermarket HU together with Top Hifi/Hifi amp.

Standard audio

This system has got NO separate amplifier. It uses the same speakers as the Hifi system except that it lacks the subwoofers behind the seats and the midrange speakers in the doors. Resulting in a 6 speaker system.

There are no wires present in the doors to add the midrange speakers. You must run the wiring thru the connectors inside the door.

Personal mods

My zzzz came with the Standard audio system.

IMHO it lacks clarity, detail and good stereo front stage… so I started to work.

I replaced my headunit with Pioneers DEH-P77MP. Capable of playing mp3/wma. It has got a real brushed alu finish. Works good together with my alu trim.




To use a normal headunit you need the 1 DIN bezel, which you can get from your stealer for about 50€. Part# 65-90-0-301-349.

Here is a pic of the mid range of the Focal's 165KP composet. They need an aftermarket amp to perform well.



This is a two way system, meaning 1 6.5" midbass driver goes in the footwells and 1 1" tweeters goes...euh well... where the tweeter goes. A so called "crossover network" is used to feed each driver with the correct frequencyrange (midbass<3.5khz<tweeter)



This is the Focal titanium dome TN45 tweeter. Older versions of alu dome tweeters produced a harsh sound on the “S” in the lyrics, but this is history. I prefer these tweeters over silk dome version because of their excellent clarity and detail.

Put a bipolair condensator over the rear mid speakers. This prevents that frequencies of less then 400hz are sent to these speakers. Adjust fader for optimal front stage.

Power comes from 2 Helix HXA20 MK II amps which are mounted vertically on the back of the trunk.




If you are keeping your stock headunit and want to combine it with an aftermarkt amp (or ampS), you'll need at least 2 high level input/low level output adapters to convert the amplified signal from the headunit (speaker out connections) to a low level input signal for the amp.

No cutting required, all the adapters can be bought in a car hifi shop.



The antenna connector is of the "VW" type Shocked and an adapter is available at your car hifi shop.

Now..., the bass!

Because I didn't want to give up any trunk space, I did not put a wooferbox in my trunk... Instead, I optimized the cabinets where the Carver woofers would be (or the storage compartment if you have got the "simple" hifi system).

For my Morel Elate 6 6.5" midbass woofers, the cabinets are completely SEALED and filled with Dacron fibre. I did some calculations to make the cabinet perfect for the driver. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! A driver in a wrongfully (does this word exist?) designed cabinet (sealed or opened, the so called Bass-reflex) or wrong internal volume WILL NOT WORK.

All this can be calculated with a nifty little tool, WinISD, which you can get for free from www.linearteam.dk You will need the drivers Thiele and Small parameters Rolling Eyes

I used MDF 12mm to fabricate the mounting plates. Bolt them airtight using the oem holes. Afterwards screw in the speaker.

This works VERY GOOD;

Overall very good value for money: Kenwood KFCWDA69RC. Comes with one 100 watt Class D mono amp and a little wired remote. VERY IMPORTANT: these woofers need a bass reflex cabinet!! I just didn't seal the "hole" that is in the cabinet towards the trunk. Sounded very good for the price. No Dacron fibre is needed.

im not sure i get it... just had mt rear subs replaced cause i thought they were blown only to find out there crap. so what did you use for the rear subs and a top HIFI system? mine still all distorted an crap...

Hello - Excellent information! One question:

1. I have an 05 3.0 with premium audio - Carver
2. I am buying an additional head unit for future use if needed (ebay)
3. I need to know how to tell if the auctioned head unit is a DSP model.
4. Would the pin connectors - amount of, configuration, etc. be of any help
5. Do I have to install the extra radio, power it up and check for DSP mode in the display?
6.HELP!!

(I know I am bumping this thread from the dead)

All of the stock Z4 audio systems are horrible. If anybody ends up reading this at some point and wants to overhaul their sound experience feel free to message me. I've spent countless hours messing around with various different complete aftermarket systems.

A huge upgrade in sound can be had for not much money once the stock amplifier is sold. These go for around $300-400, and you can essentially buy a far more powerful amplifier, two subs for the rear, 3 way component speakers and a new headunit for nearly the same cost.

I didn't read all of your original post as I am not that knowledgeable about the technicalities of sound systems however I do want a better listening experience in my car. I am no so sure about changing the head unit as I do not want to have to put the original in the truck so I don't begin having errors, I will tell you what I have to put in it, if you don't mind you can tell me what you think? I plan to overhaul my sound experience in my 2005 BMW Z4. My CID is only working 10% of the time and then the Nav system is the pits.

You suggest getting rid of the stock (trunk) amplifier and replace it with other after market equipment. I would love to see your latest ideas. Thanks.

I did a complete overhaul of my 04 3.0i's stereo system. I had not yet found this forum and ended up recreating the work above from the technical service manual diagram (in German no less). I can confirm that this is accurate for my particular trim level.

For reference I installed the following...

New Head unit (flip up touch screen option)
Included front facing and backup camera install
New 6.5" speakers front and back
New rear mid speakers (4")
Retained existing door mid speakers and tweeters
Powered using 2 1,000W mini class D amplifiers in the battery compartment where factory amplifier was located.

Audio volume and clarity are definitely improved over the factory setup. I now have Bluetooth, SD card, video, and many other modern conveniences available. I had to give up the steering wheel mounted controls (i planned to replace the wheel anyway so no big loss there).

I have some more tweaking to do for optimization of sound but I can now listen to whatever I like with the top down on the highway.
