You don't need a machine to reset the service intervals on the Z4. It all can be performed from the instrument cluster.

^True.
The Peake paid for itself in peace-of-mind when I got an SES one day in the middle of the Mojave.

As for the Creader, all kidding aside, it looks like a nice tool for the price.
A B&W Actron with similar features is about $250.
These dedicated scanners are going to have to get a lot better and cheaper fast, or iPhone apps are going to eat their lunch. Looks like "Launch" gets it.

I don't have an iPhone.

Wait a minute ... I have 2 iPod touches!
Why isn't one of them hooked to my car?

Fiddina solve that. I'm about to pull the trigger on the PLX Kiwi 2, unless can suggest better.

Help me out of the Dark Ages:
1) What is an "SES" and why would it constitute a dire emergency? ...and if dire, why wouldn't everyone have a Peake in an on-board toolkit?

2) What else will the Peake do? The idea that it seems to not be laptop dependent does have its appeal -- especially if carried as an emergency tool.

3) Dark Ages help: "Launch" app does what?? I checked out he PLX Kiwi 2 on Amazon. Am I correct that this is essentially a dyno??! It gives you real time data on all parameters that I could think of -- "...It can efficiently monitor a vehicle's MPG, data log engine parameters, read/reset engine trouble codes and monitor real time engine performance. Simply connect your Smartphone to this tool through a Wi-Fi connection, and launch the compatible application of your choice to obtain vital information about your vehicle...."
And per an eBay ad: "...wideband air/fuel ratio, exhaust gas temperature, vacuum/boost, air intake temperature, fluid pressure and fluid temperature...."

Does BMW block any of these apps' functions?
Have you tried one out yet, or know of someone who is using Launch?
Thanks.

Does it work with 2008 Z4? The page says it only works up to 2007 model.

I purchased an "ELM327" from ebay for $14. It is bluetooth tethered to my GS3 with Torque (free version). It also paired with my Alienware M18X laptop and the software that came with it.

It read fast and accurately. Reset the error codes after I did my repairs, and it has been the best $14 I have spent on my car.

SES = "Service Engine Soon"
Wasn't a dire emergency, but I was at least 50 miles from nowhere and it was about 115° F. Was nice to know what the codes were.

Just a scan/reset tool. Tiny and quick. Nice to keep in the trunk.
Unlike most "generic" tools, it reads the zillion BMW specific codes.
I sometimes drive 7-8 hours in a day, much of it in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, so I like to know what's up if the SES light comes on.

"Launch" is the company that makes the CReader that thelinux was posting about. I think they "get it" because they have a product that may be able to compete on price/performance with iPhone/Android apps. Outfits like Actron are going to lose all their market share trying to sell $250 black and white scanners with no graphing or logging.

Frankly, I'm not sure.
Their website is "Copyright © Peake Research Corp. 1989-2007 - All Rights Reserved".
I guess that was the Peake of their Research, and then they turned off the lights and went home.

If you have a smartphone or iPod, I would suggest the app route.

The KIWI is $120.
The ELM327 is cheaper than the iPhone mounts I've been looking at and probably does everything that I need for now.

The nice thing about the KIWI is they have sending units you can add.
I always wanted oil pressure, coolant temp, and volts. You get the latter 2 on the OBD, but need the additional sending unit for oil pressure.
The LeatherZ ashtray gauge pod is nice, except that it's $700, and it's in the ashtray, and the gauges point up at an unfavorable angle, and ...

Great info, and thanks.
Is there any difference between the different ELM327's offered on eBay? Will they all do the same thing, or have you been able to discern any differences.

For instance there is this one -- Bluetooth and all, and very small:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-ELM327-...870441&vxp=mtr

And there is this one -- larger, but Bluetooth, etc.:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/newest-v1-5-..._Tools&vxp=mtr

KEEP IT COMING -- this info is hard to get by oneself.
thanks.

Here's a tidbit.
ELM327 is an OBD interpretation code implemented on a PIC. ELM sells the chips, and busy fingers in China put them in nice little holders. Or busy hackers in China stole the PIC code, as described in the WikiPedia article. Hence all the various versions available on eBay.
I'm going to buy the one TestShoot did. Since it's a total crap-shoot, at least we have one recommendation to go on.
Besides, it's down to $13, and free shipping.
What can possibly go wrong?

And I almost paid $120 for the KIWI! Glad I through it out there for recommendations.
However, I'm considering the ELM as a test. I may still go with the KIWI if I'm happy with the concept, and find a good place to mount the iPod, and decide I want to add an oil pressure sender.

Will update the thread with results.
I also bought this mounting kit, and this that I'll probably just use for testing purposes. I think the shifter is likely to crash into the lighter gooseneck, and it's an unfavorable viewing position.

Yep, I went ahead and got one too.
TestShoot should be getting a commission from the manufacturer.

iPhone/iPod and Bluetooth **BEWARE**

Just got my $12 ELM and was looking for apps. Turns out that Apple's Bluetooth is proprietary and app support is almost non-existent.
Looks like a possible route is "jailbreak" my iPod, and install a 3rd party standards compliant Bluetooth stack.

When Googling how to jailbreak the iOS, the first thing that comes up is the iOS 6.1.3 has a patch to prevent the most popular jailbreak app.
Sure enough, I turn on my iPod and the first thing that comes up is "6.1.3 available. Install now."

Don't upgrade to iOS 6.1.3 unless you plan to get a Kiwi!!

Moving on to jailbreaking. Will report results.

I had gotten my ELM327 (bludetooth version), and just now tried loading the program -- BLANK DISK! Have to now file an eBay grievance, and all that rubbish that comes with their inefficiency in resolving claims.

Before you go nuclear and file a Ebay grievance, have you contacted the seller so he can attempt to fix the issue?

Came with a mini CD that says Bluetooth?
I don't think there's much on there that you need.
Mine has BlueSoleil and ScanTool and instructions in Engrish.

Update: Jailbreak complete. Running Cydia ... please wait ...
Update: Installing roqyBT4 ... please wait ...
Update: roqyBT4 installed. Connects to ELM dongle. Now I have to buy a license for roqy and buy DasCommand $$$. (Stay away from Rev. It has bad reviews and has been abandoned by the developer.) Update: Have roqy licensed and DashCommand installed. Works! Response may be a little slow, but good enough. Need to RTFM for DashCommand.

Here's what I got in the package: instructions ("user manual") and an empty 225MB minidisk (see atchmt). Had already contacted the seller.

But, just as a note to those who might not have had much experience with eBay problems --- don't wait too long for the seller to respond, as there is a time limit in which to formally complain.

I went to the two websites -- downloading is free?
The Scantool site says the Android app is free, but I want it on my notebook. Did you buy your scanner from ScanTool?

Likewise. the BlueSoleil --$27

I'm going in a whole different direction.
I want my iPod stuck to my dash with gauges on it.

Just bought DashCommand and am doing this to try and get it to work with Bluetooth. Will be testing shortly.

Seems to work. Spent all afternoon thumbing through DashCommand dashboards.
Default one is pretty nice, and performance is OK, but needs voltmeter.
User created skins are very slow on iPod. Maybe OK on a PC.
So I downloaded the skin editor and have been hacking for a while.
Don't know if this works yet, may need some tweaks, but it looks cool.
Here's a link to the project on DashXL.net.
I need a higher res ZPost logo on a black background.

Edit: Dashboard works! Not so sure about the Bluetooth though. Today while I was testing the dashboard it would disconnect every 2-3 minutes. I don't think it's the EML327, I think it's the roqyBT jailbreak hack. Need to do more testing. May end up with the Kiwi after all.
