Question about shifter selector rod

Hey guys,

My friend is giving me the AKG shifter with the selector rod, and I was wondering if the selector rod from m3e46 is same for z4m?
Just making sure I dont get stucked in the middle of installation.

Thanks. Is it worth it to upgrade to those aluminum from akg? Or just keep Stock with akg shifter?

Are you talking about upgrading the selector rod, or the shifter rod?

If the selector rod is from an E46 M3, it won't fit. The shifter rod (the rod that the knob is attached to) will fit, but the angle will be off. The Z4 shifter rod is significantly shorter and straighter than the E46 M3 rod and you may come in contact with the "hole" that's cut to accommodate the shifter rod thus preventing you from getting into reverse/1st or 5/6.

The ONLY E46 short shift kit that works on the Z4, is ones designed for the 6 speed ZHP 330i. Those shifters have a relatively straight "bend" at the pivot, thus does not interfere with shift patterns.

You can try it, and if it comes in contact with the transmission tunnel, take it out and bend the stick straight. In my personal opinion, too much hassle.

I dont understand shifter rod =(...dont understand much about shifters. is the shifter rod you are talking about in the first link? if so, I guess even the shifter wont work for me?
I dont want any custom bending or anything....its not worth the hassle lol

AKG has different part numbers for Z4 and E46.
I agree with what the HACK is saying.

This shifter eliminates one of the OE pieces; the carrier.
With this shift kit there are two pieces, the vertical shifter c/w shift knob.
And, the selector rod, which is the horizontal connector between the tranny and shifter.

If your friend is giving you E46 parts, they won't work.
You could contact AHG and see what they say to be sure.

Interesting design. Without seeing the bottom of the shifter I can't say for sure whether or not it will fit.

IF he's giving it to you for free, I don't see why you can't test fit and see if it works. The only thing I will add, is the rod that goes from the bottom of the shifter to the transmission (the selector rod in my parlance) is Z4 specific and not interchangeable with the E46. IF the shifter shaft is straight up and down, it MIGHT work.

So what would be your thoughts? In trying anyway cuz I'm stubborn haha!

The stick appears straight and should not interfere with shift pattern. Now you will need to remove the stock shifter and measure from the point of the pivot to the bottom of the linkage to see if the length works.
