Sound generator

Wow. I just removed one piece of foam from the inside of the sound generator. No real noticeable change before 3500 RPM, but at full throttle and above 4000, all hell breaks loose! Intoxicating!

It took less than 1minute to remove. If you have one, remove it! You can always put it back, but I don't think I will any time soon.

Is the additional noise audible from outside the car, e.g. to a pedestrian on the sidewalk?

No, interior only for the added perception of performance.

Thanks, I've been meaning to do this but just keep forgetting to try it.

sound gen

Yea, I finally took mine out a couple weeks ago. I took out one piece. It was ok, then I took out the other piece and cut it in half, and stuck a half piece in there. I like it this way, nice sound in the cab now.

Like the OP said, if you don't like it or get tired of it you can always put it back in and it will be returned to stock.

I like this mechanism much better than the "Active Sound" digitally being piped through the speakers on the M3/M4, i8, M235, etc. Instead, this is the real sound of the engine, not artificial in any way. They just allowed the sound to pass through the firewall. And it's great to be able to adjust it. Sound is definitely part of the experience, no doubt. If a Ferrari were as silent as a Prius, I don't think it would have as much appeal.

I just did this too. I took out the larger foam piece first, but was not happy with the high-pitched sound I get over 4000 rpm. I put it back in and took out the smaller foam piece and it sounds much better. I didn't notice much of a difference at WOT because it's a noisy car to begin with, but at idle you can definitely hear the engine sound a little meaner

Thinking back on why I got a high-pitched whine when I took out the larger foam piece, I wonder if it's because I didn't get the flex-piping back securely into the firewall. I kept trying to put it back and seemed loose every time.

You shouldn't have that high pitch whine, sounds like (sorry for the pun) you've got a loose connection or a crack in a section of a tube from moving it around.

That's what I was thinking after I realized the flex tube was somewhat loose at the firewall. I think I'll try to swap the larger foam piece out again and see if I still get the same noise.

I've got that high pitched whine also, mostly when I cruise the highway at, say, 3500rpm. I didn't know there was a sound generator on this car. Where is it located?

Z4 Ms do not have sound generators, only the Si models 85/86.
