Z4 Wax Options

Hey all, I have a 2006 Z4 3.0 s.i. that I baby like there is no other. I went to wax her today after I clayed it yesterday and I got nervous using the wax I bought. I used Meguiars NXT Tech Wax 2.0. It says to spread on entire car, let dry, and then wipe off easily. I did the hood, quarter panel, and drivers door and it looked as if it were dry so I thought I would go ahead and buff those areas. Man I had to really bear down and it left somewhat of a film on the hood. I went ahead and buffed the remaining areas I had done but was not going to use it on the rest of the car.

Was I doing it wrong? Is there a better wax to use on a BMW? I was using a Meguiars Microfiber towel also.

Sorry you are having problems.
This excerpt is from am online detailers blog so take from it what you will

"Drying Time: Personally, I have never found drying time to be an issue with the Meguiar’s Tech Wax 2.0. It’s not a product that you immediately need to remove, so that’s not an issue. Also, I have never found it to be a product that is difficult to remove if it has been left on a surface for a long time. All in all, once you have applied the Tech Wax 2.0 to the whole car, you can wait about fifteen to thirty minutes before removing the product."

You need more than one towel. Many are needed. Once the cloth is loaded up with wax, it will start to streak and it is harder to remove.

You also most likely put too much wax on. Most people do. A little goes a long way.

There is no perfect wax. It all depends on what you plan to accomplish.
figure out what you want to do. Do you want longevity and or protection? Do you want the best shine... The color of your paint also has a large factor in this. Some coatings look better on dark colors, some on lighter colors.

I will not tell you what to buy. You are going to have to do some research to find out what you want. You might even change your mind on a particular brand.

The auto detailing sites and forums are a huge repository of information.

To name a few:
Autogeek.net (a great resource on HOW to do things)
Autotopia
Detailing world forum

If you are really into getting the most out of what you are trying to accomplish, after some of your research, you will find out that for most part, you will stay away from most auto store/department store coatings... and...... surface prep is the biggest thing....

Thank you. The car is a dark blue and paint is beautiful. Been garaged and only has 34K miles on it. I will look at the websites you suggested. Can't be cheap on a BMW.

I personally like the wax. I use it on all my cars. I assume there is better. But, for now ignorance is bliss.

How long do you let it sit on your car before buffing? The box says it wipes off easily and I didn't have that experience.

I've used McQuires for years, Gold is the one I have. Use it sparingly let it haze and it always comes off easily. Think I'll wax the beast this weekend.

Probably around 30mins. Mine comes off easy enough.

I'm a fan of Klasse AIO for a polymer sealant and their sealant glaze. For depth, a carnauba wax but usually I have no time for it.

I've used that wax before and just left it until it all hazed over. Maybe about 30 minutes after I finish applying it to the whole car.

I doubt the length of time left on the car is a factor here.. all signs point to over-application.

In between professional detailing I just give it a quick spray of Meguiar's Ultimate Quik Detailer and Wax (2 separate products). They take 5 min each to apply to the whole car. Okay, maybe 6 minutes if you have a coupe. Easy to use, high quality products for the busy family man. It doesn't give the same showroom shine as carnauba wax, but it does 90% of the job in 10% of the time. It's literally just spray and wipe. No elbow grease required.

I've been an AIO/SG fan for many years. I recently swapped the SG for Wolfgang's sealant and so far I like the fact that it's easier to buff off with less residue.

I agree - used to use in the past. A little goes a very long way. Too much and I got streaks and really had to bear down and rub. Never liked it on a darker colored car - great for lighter colors IMO>

As others said, sounds like you put on too much. I use Klasse high gloss sealant which is a huge pain to remove. I use some quick detail spray to aid in removing the sealant after it dries, it will also help you get rid of the wax residue.

It's been a while since I had time to apply SG after AIO (even the latter....sadly) but I do recall it being a little trickier to remove. Not horribly painful, but a little QD does help. Love AIO, though....awesome product.

I prefer to use the waxes polishes etc from garats garage, if taken the time to do it properly you can obtain glass like finish. The only OTC stuff I occasionally use are the products made by surf city, little pricey, but never had any issues and I like it better then mcguires/mothers
