RFT performance with sidewall slash

I hit pothole and now need to replace my front right tyre. I've still got the OEM Bridgestone RE050 RFTs and have been debating a change to non-RFTs for a while. Though my mind's pretty much made up, does anyone know if RFTs performance is lessened in the event of a sidewall slash? This is the last bit of info I need to make up my mind about a switch, and if there's no benefit to RFTs in the event of a sidewall slash then I'm simply going to standard tyres and carry a repair kit (like the Conti one that TireRack sells)...
