My $3.50 muffler delete
I have listened to a bunch of videos on here and like the way the muffler delete sounds. I was going to get a exhaust shop to fabricate me up a set of tips but I wanted to hear it in person first
I went to the hardware store and grabbed 12 washers, took the bolts out of the mufflers, removed the gaskets, and replaced them with washers, basically creating an exhaust leak before the mufflers It sounds mean, and honestly the drone isnt too bad on the highway. I may just leave it like this for a while and see how it goes |

Hmmm...interesting idea. Wonder if you can "tune" the loudness with the appropriate gap "leak"

lol, This is brilliant. You make want to do it for a day or two. I had a friend who instead cut a hole in his exhaust pipe to do basically the same thing you did. I made fun of him for so long. He had to eventually get it welded back together.

I don't care if you could snap your fingers and change it back. It's retarded and ghetto. Do you drive a civic?

Sorry I have to agree, can't say I'd ever want to do this on my car.
Achieving the sound of an aftermarket exhaust via self imposed exhaust leak is not something I'd ever do on a BMW. But like others always say, as long as you like it that's all that matters. |

i'm glad you tried this. honestly, 3.50 is certainly cheaper than your time is worth... meaning that the amount of time needed to fully remove and then reinstall the muffler was probabaly better spent elsewhere.
i personally am not a fan of an unmuffled exhaust on a street car, mainly because of my neighbor with the harley that drives by. sure it sounds great, but i'd rather not hear it inside my house. inexpensive ingenuity and exploration gets a big from me. any time something can be altered and bettered in your opinion is a step in the right direction. hopefully you're undaunted by people's opinions on a public forum; good or bad. who knows... maybe you'll stumble onto something everyone will absolutely love. the first guy to try the CDV delete didn't know how people would react when he posted about it. or the guy who removed the foam from the non-///m sound generators. or the thicker spring pads for the h&r spring setup. or the removal of the carbon filter from the intake of s54's (turns out, not a great idea). keep the flow of ideas coming! they're always welcome here on zpost. -eric

It only took approx 15 minutes from start to finish. I didn't have to remove the mufflers. I just removed the 4 bolts, slid out the gaskets, the reinstalled the bolts with the washers |

Why is removing the carbon filter from the intake a bad idea? I haven't had any problems with it... |

something about the way the interior of the OE box is designed makes it quite quirky. it appears that the s54 is the only engine affected by this, as the TSB only applies to the s54. there is a lot of discussion about this on e46fanatics, and even a few threads here on zpost that cover it. i believe the m3 guys have even shown zero gain in power via dyno by removing the filter or the snorkel. aftermarket intakes do not seem to be affected by these symptoms. if you're not seeing any negative effects, leave it out. if you start to have idle issues, you now have a possible cheap fix in simple reinstallation of the filter.
