RPI with Silencers
Well, I finally got around to doing a pile of mods to my Z4M. I recently installed Evolve CF Airbox, Euro headers w/relocated O2, and RPI exhaust. As planned the RPI's blew my ears off. But, I was prepared and bought a pair of silencers from RPI for just this type of issue. After installing the silencers I have to say they have made a huge difference! So far, I have only been able to try them out around town, but it is night and day so far! In my opinion, they sound great now! Also, I can take them out when I am concerned about performance. I haven't had a chance to try them on the expressway yet, but if all goes as planned the drone and volume will have been significantly reduced. I am surprised no one had tried this yet? Or, at least I wasn't able to find anything on the forum prior to purchase. Now, you can have the great looks and sound of RPI at a manageable volume and drone!

fdagen, can you get pics of your setup? I'm certainly curious. This would be a lot better than switching back to the stock exhaust every time I go on a longer drive and want to keep my hearing.

RPI
Its exactly what is show above, except I only have two silencers due to the fact that our exhaust only has two of the larger outlets. You drill a hole from the bottom of the exhaust up and and screw in the baffles, so the screws are not visible at all. You can see the silencers now, but RPI says they will blacken over time an you will not be able to see them shortly. I will post a pic sometime this week.

Cool. I contacted RPI about getting a set. I'll probably paint them black ahead of time. I honestly never heard of them making these as an option.

Looks restrictive...sorta defeats the purpose of having a "free-flowing" or "free-er flowing" exhaust

I think the point is the quiet the exhausts down in a non-perminant way. The RPIs are notoriously loud and being able to keep them on but hear yourself think while driving would be nice. That's why I want them at least. That and my girlfriend wont hate riding in my car! Well maybe she'll still hate the way I drive, but at least she'll be able to yell at me.... Now I'm starting to rethink if I want these...

If the exhaust is too loud for me, I would yank it off and go the route of finding a quieter muffler, yet still free-flowing, rather than trying something that may adversely affect performance...but that's just me. Why do you guys get an overly loud exhaust and then try to quiet it down by restricting it? Not sure I understand this logic Last edited by XMetal; 10-20-2014 at 10:54 PM.. |

It has been proven on a dyno by rpi that adding two of these has a negligible effect on HP and they can be removed at any time. I believe you gain 7hp by adding RPIs and loose three by adding the silencers. Still a net gain. I bought these for both performance and looks as well as sound. Now I get the same exotic sound in a more enjoyable way for me and everyone around me.

Just throw the back of the car on Jack stands. Get a 3/8 stainless bit and 15 mins later your all set. Just be careful with the drill bit walking, mine did on the second one, and I am mad that it's not perfect. 😜 But oh well, don't sweat the small stuff.

Hi guys, the silencers will fit any of our exhausts with 3.5" tips. For the Z4M exhaust, it will fit the larger of the tips only. A lot of the exhaust gasses will be diverted to the smaller tip which will reduce drone significantly. As for a GB, I'm not too sure what we can do on it. We do not even wholesale the silencers. It's one of those things we hate to make because there is no profit in it, but we feel bad charging our loyal exhaust customers a lot for them.

An easy way to install it is to put the silencer all the way in as far as it will go. Then pull it out about an inch, mark where you need to drill and then drill in a low speed setting.
One of the things I do sometimes is spray paint the silencer black if the person doesn't like the look of it. If you guys need help or have questions, don't hesitate to ask. |
