2018 Mustang

Quote:
Video footage of the facelifted 2018 Ford Mustang has surfaced on the web.

Pictured here in the promotional clip that was sent to us by Mustang6G is the 2018 Mustang GT 5.0 with the Performance Package.

From a first look, it appears that Ford has performed some tweaks to the front end, including revised headlamps that obtain a small kink on the bottom part, elongated LEDs, a redesigned bumper with different openings, and a resculpted hood. It does look kind of droopy, but it's probably best we wait for official photos before jumping into any conclusions.

On the opposing end, it seems like Ford redesigned the tail-lamps while retaining the three-unit look. We don't get any views of the interior, but some changes are expected inside too.

There have also been rumors swirling that Ford may drop the current 3.7-liter V6 leaving the 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-pot as the standard unit, as well as adopting the Ford and GM co-developed 10-speed automatic transmission already used in the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Camaro ZL1, but none of this has officially been confirmed yet.

2018 Ford Mustang Facelift Loses V6, Gains New Face, 10-Speed Auto And Digital Cluster

Quote:
After a successful career of almost two-and-a-half years on the market, the sixth-gen Ford Mustang is getting its awaited facelift for the 2018MY.

The mid-life refresh brings on a tweaked face for the 2018 Ford Mustang, courtesy of the new headlights, redesigned front bumper, a wider front grille and a resculpted bonnet that’s 20mm lower. At the back, we see new C-shaped rear light clusters, the diffuser that is now finished in black, and in the GT, a small rear wing.

The big news is that Ford is ditching the 3.7-litre V6 option from the range as it was already the weak member of the sales chart, with the company focusing instead on the 2.3-litre EcoBoost and the 5.0-litre V8 versions which now gain a new 10-speed automatic gearbox option.

The manual gearbox that’s paired with the 5.0-litre V8 has also been upgraded with a twin-disc clutch and a dual-mass flywheel while the new ten-speed automatic is said to offer faster shift times and responses than the outgoing six-speed automatic.

The V8 engine itself is also getting a refresh, gaining a direct injection and port fuel injection which makes it more frugal and more powerful at the same time but Ford hasn’t provided any figures yet. The 2.3-litre EcoBoost is also going to offer more torque than before.

Other revisions include the addition of an optional digital cluster with a 12-inch screen instead of the traditional analog gauges, offering three separate views –normal, sport and track mode. A new active valve exhaust system allows the driver now to adjust the soundtrack of the V8-equipped versions while Ford has also given the 2018 Mustang a range of active safety systems such as Pre-Collision Assist with pedestrian detection, distance alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist and Driver Alert System.

The new Ford Mustang also benefits from new shock absorbers, a new cross-axis joint in the rear suspension which allegedly increases lateral stiffness and new stabilizer bars to further sharpen the car’s responses and handling character. MagneRide adaptive dampers are also available as an option for the first time.

Finally, the interior now features “improved touch points” which is another way of saying softer plastics at the driver’s immediate vicinity, and visual cues aiming to give a more premium look. These include a new hand-stitched wrap with contrast stitching and padded knee bolsters in the center console, with the door handles, rings and bezels now finished in aluminum.

Ford will launch the new 2018 Mustang in North America this fall, so stay tuned for the full details.

That front end looks terrible. Like a Sperm whale and the Mustang had a child.

The front looks a lot better in the picture vs video, IMO. Nice to see an updated chassis and Coyote. Lot of V8 car for WAY less than a base 430i.

Dropping the V6 option entirely would seem to be a bit of a dubious choice. Sure, it might not sell well, but that's because the NA 3.5L they were using doesn't perform better than the 2.3L I4 turbo. I would expect that if they were to add the 2.7L V6 turbo as found in the Fusion sport or perhaps a version of the 3.0L V6 turbo as found in the Lincoln MKZ and Continental, they would find plenty of takers. Now, whether that fits with their strategy for the car is another matter, but it seems like there should be room for an engine between the I4 and the V8.

Longer term, I expect the V8 will be downsized to 4.5L or less and go FI too. That should open them up to upwards of ~500hp in the GT, and at that point a ~400hp V6 model is almost a necessity. It seems like they would ideally want to keep the V6 going until then, but I suppose they do lower their costs by dropping it so I can see the advantage for now.

I like the front, they should have left the back unchanged.

You don't always have to change for the sake of change.

The 2018 Mustang sports a refreshed exterior design, with a lower, sleeker hood and squinty new LED headlights. Inside, buyers can now opt for a 12-inch-wide full digital instrument cluster to bring its retro-inspired cabin further into the 21st century.

Agreed, should have left the quad tips for the upper end models (GT350/500).

The Coyote now revs to 7400rpm.

My first car was a brand new 2011 Mustang GT back when the 5.0 was just introduced. The exhaust note (especially with Roush exhaust) is still one of the most intoxicating sounds I've ever heard - not even the AMG M156 or SVR V8 come close (AMG is too deep and SVR is too raspy. The Coyote is just right). I like to think that my Mustang days are behind me after owning a 2011 5.0 and a 1965 289ci Coupe but I might consider an S550.2 Shelby GT350 if the lust for this new Mustang doesn't wear off.

10 speed automatic? Why that's the most ludicrous offering I've seen. The gears will be too close and you'll be shifting endlessly.

My son drives a Ford Fusion and the new Mustang's front and his Fusion look alike.
IMHO
Not liking the new front end.

Nice cars, but just too common. No originality when you see 10 of them every time you go to the store.

LOL not sure if serious. I would love a new ZL1 w/the 10 speed.

The hood on the 2018 stang does not fit IMO

Yup, which is the main reason why the S550 or the 6th gen SS are 99% off my potential next toy list. I want something you don't see daily.

That's like saying you don't want an M3 because there are so many 3 series around...

Yeah, I think Bluey//M was joking. Underestimate the ZL1 10 speed at your own peril! Chevy says that 10 speed auto will do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 11.4. On stock tires.
