Edit... found a pic of the heat sheild on RealOEM. It is number 7 in this pic. Although I think my heat sheild didn't quite look like that one.

You have to do that with ebay headers in general. This clearance is the same between e46 and z4 M as it is dictated by the engine and not the chassi.
