z4 M differential fluid

Looking to change the fluid in my differential. I'm finding it difficult to find the SAF-XJ without the Friction Modifier (83221467993). I've seen some posts saying that the Castrol Syntrax 75W-140 is equivalent. Has anyone used this or found any other substitute?

I changed to Liqui Moly 75w-140 about 20k miles. No problem or any noise from diff.

Redline can be had without the FM within it, it can be sold separately and added if you encounter chatter. I never use the BMW FM stuff, it defeats the diff's purpose IMO.

Please expand on the use of FM and the operation of the Diff. Thanks in advance.

The friction modifier reduces friction to alleviate the "noise". Groaning, is normal, chatter is not. If you use the friction modifier, the diff will lock less, thereby reducing its effectiveness.

All my BMW diffs have groaned in the cold.

It's funny we see these posts most often when winter approaches or sets in
