What year ?

Probably a stupid question to ask you guys but I am new to buying a pe-owned/used/secondhand car in the USA.
I go to Kelly's Blue Book or Edmunds to get the price and they ask me for the "year".
What is the "year" ?
Is it :
1 Year of manufacture as printed on the little sticker on the driver's door frame ?
2 Year of registration by first buyer as reported on Carfax ?
3 Model year ?
I can't believe it's 3 because local dealers here are selling "2014 models" which, as we are only in March, could have been built in 2012.
On another tack, I trotted along to my local car auction site hoping to bid there for a good used car. To my astonishment I was more or less thrown out by a guy who said "it's dealers only, we have to get a profit from the public somehow". I've bought many cars in the UK at auctions where dealers and Joe Public mix happily. Is this a Massaachusetts thing or US wide ? Seems to smack very much of a restrictive practice in the Land of the Free.

I think you'll find it is #3 (that's the most common number sign here, pronounced pound or hash). I never really understood the whole year thing either for exactly the reasons you stated. So when you buy an '03 it could actually be 12 yrs old not 10. On the same tip, you could have bought a '14 earlier this year and drive it for almost two years and still sell it a current year model at the end of next year. Can't help with the US car auction question as I live in Canada.

3Point is correct. Nearly always means the model year. The only exception I can recall is when talking paint, then, sometimes they will want to know the year and month of manufacture.

Nobody cares about purchase date.

My Z4M, btw is an '08... Manufacture 10/08. Sold 02/10/09. I figure it was among last made and sold.

Do you have you production number? I wonder if you can try to pin it down based on that and the forum.

Looked on http://www.bmwmdata.com/Home.html and it looks like they only have production dates through August (but I don't know how complete their system is). In any event, there cant be many after yours.

How awesome would it be to have the last one sold?

10/2008 is strange... According to all the numbers I've seen (and the big CSV file of all M Roadsters/Coupes in North America), the last one has a production date of 8/18/2008.

You're probably right, Intoflatlines, 10/08 was a mistake. Not sure where that date came from - sure I read it on something. ;-) Door sticker shows 08/08. I am sure 4 year warranty expired 2/10/2013; so sell date was correct.
