M3 SMG shift light mod

is it possible to activate the E46 M3 SMG shift light in the Z4 M?

surely someone has tried it, everything is there.

nope, that's not it.

I'm talking about the the redline lights that disappear as the motor warms up that the SMG cars use as a shift light.

since the manual cars already have those in place there must be a way to use them as shift lights too.

I think it would be a little tricky to serve a multi function purpose like that.
Theoretically easy to do in software, but I don't see how you'd get access.

Seems like a no go, to me.

Other than at the 1320.... when would you really use this function?

that shift light was very handy in my M3 SMG when at the track.

I drive the car on the limit almost once a week.

Can't you just glance at the needle? I mean...it's right next to the warm up lights.

At the track, you can pick up a light in your peripheral vision & keep "eyes up"
If I was doing it at all, I'd mount an LED in the A pillar, rather than in the gauge pod.

Good point. I guess you should just install a HUD like the M6 has.

seems to me there are some 3rd party HUDs out there.... no idea how good they are though.

I'm somewhat surprised that we haven't seen more implementation of HUDs by now.

oh well... i was hoping that someone had done it before.

in that case i'll be working on that this winter. probably leaving the last ellow and the two red on all the time and using the rest for shifting and removing the temperature functionality altogether. the engine temp gauge is quite enough.

I have seen a thread about changing the rpm lines on a MINI to do exactly what you are talking about. They had to hack into the CAN Bus and modify some of the internals to drive the led's properly. I think the write-up was on www.northamericanmotoring.com. Do a search and it should pop up.

Edit: Found the thread, good luck.

You can always get an Autometer shift light and crack it open, then wire it to the dash or anywhere you like. A plus with the Autometer is you can adjust the shift points.
