The guy that got me hooked on cars.....
....my Ol' Man.
I remember vividly the times looking over his shoulder as a kid as he tinkered in the driveway. He would point out something under the hood and ask "do you know what that is?" Invariably the answer was "no" and he would explain in great length what it was and what it did. The next time he would point out something new, but before he would tell me what it was, he would quiz me on what he explained before. This went on until I perfected his quizzing well enough that he actually let me help him turn a wrench. I still remember the first thing I ever did on a car (with Dad) was change a set of plugs, points & condenser and set the timing. A few years later Dad bought his first new car, a cream coloured '58 Buick Special. I can still see him the day he brought that car home & how proud he was to own that car. As chance would have it, Dad held true to form & got into a minor fender bender within the first month. After the repairs, the car had this intermittent steel on steel (like chalk on the board) squeak. After getting frustrated with it himself, he took it in several times to get it fixed without any success.... It drove him nuts. So.... I decided to have a look on my own. After crawling around under the car for an hour or so (a skinny 8yr old kid could actually fit under a car in those days) It was pure shit luck that I saw a cracked weld on the frame. I don't think I've ever seen my Dad happier & felt so proud to be his son as I did that day! & that's how I'll always remember him. ....Dad passed away last night in his 93rd year.

Hi InTgr8r,
I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. It sounds like he was a great fellow and even though he lived a long life, I'm sure you are going to miss him quite a lot. I confess that some times I blather on about various things, but now I'm at a bit of a loss for words to convey how sorry I am or to help you feel a small bit better. You and your Dad are in my prayers and I hope you have many fond memories of him. Take care.

Ian, I am so sorry to hear about this. My condolences. Words seem so inadequate at times like these.
But I will say that's a really great story, so many great memories, and it's wonderful to hear about the great connection you two forged together and he helped you forge with cars. And you're right, that passion for cars is always going to be a part of you, just as he is always going to be a part of you, just as he will always be there with you while you're turning a wrench. |

Thanks gang, your thoughts are truly appreciated.
Yeah, it's definitely true in my case... The lugnut doesn't fall far from the wheel.

My Dad was that guy too. So many memories of him and the cars we enjoyed that now I can think back on and smile instead of feeling sad (it's been over 2 years). I keep one of his pipes he used to smoke (I used to pack it for him while he was driving) in my screwdriver rack in my garage. When I encounter a problem when working on a car, or just feeling pensive I'll grab it and think of him.
My deepest condolences. The memories will endure, cherish them. Evan |

Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go to you and yours. And thank you for the story.
My own dad was my inspiration, as well. Similar stories, except his love in automobiles were Ramblers. His only new vehicle was a '62 Custom Cross Country wagon where he piled in the whole brood and took us to places like the Jersey Shore for vacations. Amazing how the cars, people and (yes, unfortunately now the places) vanish over time but the memories remain.
