So just make sure you remember to pull your iPad out before you turn the key off since it closes automatically

Well, the iPad mini is clearly an excellent fit ... It would be wonderful if someone made a kit which has the same shape as the original sat-nav (so it just pops in), with the iPad mini built into it (instead of the satnav screen). The plastics couldn't be that expensive to make!?

Then anyone who has a Z4 without the satnav could add this little kit with an iPad mini, and have the coolest up to date Bond gadget satnav yum yum device that just pops up and disappears.

Yes that's photoshopped. I believe an iPhone would be much smaller.

A few concerns are:

If you just mount the ipad there and delete the info screen there is the concern that the motor might not be powerful enough to flip it. Also when the cradle is in closed position the ipad would probably protrude far enough forward to make it obtrusive. If the ipad is simply placed infront of the screen the width of the ipad would not allow it to close fully.

After doing some research I found you can't buy the oem plastic frame without the info display. The cheapest one on ebay is $500(all tho at a forum someone claims to have gotten it for under $100) add the cost of the ipad mini $330 and you might as well look at one of those integrated-rear-view-mirror-gps-touchscreen-video-playing-backup-camera-dimming setups. you won't have to hack away at your dash for $900

Another option would be to use the oem info nav screen to project your iphone screen into it. That way you would have the seamless operation of the open close mechanism keeping full iPhone functionality only at the expense of screen resolution.

Thoughts?

I have wondered about installing a remote switch to the moto that opens and closes the NAV screen. That way it could be left open for car shows.

Sat nav is here or there for me, but if you delete the screen, where will you get the radio/obc info from?

Well, for those of us without the satnav screen, the built-in radio/CD/stacker works beautifully as a music interface. In fact, one of the reasons I ordered my Z4 coupe without satnav was specifically because I did not want to have the screen open just to change tracks, or to see what track was playing etc. In fact, I don't want the screen open if I am just listening to music, because I find it distracting while driving. I would only want it open for satnav use ... preferably via an iPad mini interface.

Fair enough

It has intrigued me for a while also as the nav is horribly out of date, I will watch this thread with anticipation.
