Probably because most people will want to sign up for the morning only. Buttonwillow gets HOT in the afternoon in July. I was there a few weekends ago, and the Tarmac got up to 154 degrees. A few years ago I saw ambient temperatures of 116. It gets downright dangerous both physically and mentally due to the heat, not to mention the problem it poses for the equipment.

If you're mentally and physically prepare for it, the heat is manageable. I wrapped a gel filled bandana around the neck and soaked my balaclava in cold water before I went out and drank at least a full bottle of water between runs. And the MZ4 has phenomenal cooling compared to most contemporary BMWs, and I kept a close eye on tire pressure on the Nittos since they are rather sensitive to a certain range. Overall I still had a great time, although I must say I was far more mentally and physically drained than other events in the past.
Just be aware of how the heat may physically affect you and your hardware and you'll be fine.

noted! thanks hack for the pointers. I'm going to dis-invite my wife and newborn to the track on that note. that saves me towing gas/trailer

Of course Scott! If I go to enough track days, we'll eventually all be able to get out together....
