I'd try a tank or two with some techron concentrate before I blew dough on an unconfirmed part.

Priming the pump this way solved any cool weather start-up roughness I encountered with my M-Coupe.

how long do you keep your key in position 2 for? I've left mine in that position for 15 seconds one time and it did not seem to help

also i just filled using Shells 91 which has no ethanol in it, going to see if this helps

Just a few seconds (5) is plenty.

Yep. Chevron's 94 contains zero Ethanol & the most Techron. Although I doubt that's going to sort out the S54's cold-start moodiness. I think it's the nature of the beast.

On a side note, when you use the iPhone app for this site... avoid the "&" symbol and your message should be ok. Seems that interrupts things fwiw

Yea I wouldn't jump into that right away - sometimes I just like to play easter hunt on realoem.

The only other part on there I found that sounded close was a control unit for about $270 I think. But it sounds like your car just doesn't like the cold and didn't like it more than usual that day. Hopefully it was an isolated occurrence.

So I monitored the problem over the weekend, and everything was fine. I filled up the tank yesterday, and as soon as I started the car the RPMS's shot up and then down...didn't stall, but almost did.

That 94 octane made me think ... do most of the folks with the cold start issue use > 91 octane fuel? I only have 91 octane available. I've never had any cold start issue, never had to prime my fuel pump either, just jump in, start it up and drive. Valvetrain takes a few minutes for the valves to stretch but nothing more than 30 seconds and the idle is butter smooth.

Update: Didnt have any early classes this morning so i started the car around 2:00PM when it was nice and warm outside, RPM's did not drop nearly as much, barely a studder in fact so I am going to assume it is indeed the engine being very Cold in the morning that is causing this behaviour.

I'd still like to hear of your experiences though and if there are any problems with the fuel regulator pump.

I'm having the same issue intermittently. Start up the car and the rpms drop then stabilize. It has been very cold lately. Anyone found any solutions? normal?

I find mine seems to stutter a bit after starting when the temperature is in the -10°C to +5°C range. If I press the throttle down 10mm or so before turning the key, it never has a problem. At temperatures from -35°C to -10°C it doesn't need any throttle, but it does sound like a can of bolts being shaken around when starting it below -20°C

My 2007 z4m was at the dealer for almost 2 weeks for the same problem... I have the last update but, after changing the MAS, it did not fix the problem. The software is up to date. They told me they know when its colder the melange do not have enough gaz (air is denser). They cannot do anything other than suggest me to give some gaz on before starting the car....BM do not expect to make a new software update as the car is not sold anymore. They also told me they looked at the spark plug and, i could change them. They have seen sometimes it fix the problem . Mine is 36000 km.

Yup! In addition turn the key on to pressurize the fuel system prior to cranking.

Ian is the Man - I'm the sous mechanic; essentially I enter data into the PC, hand him tools and open beer!

This didn't help at all. When it's really cold it still will drop the rpms for a sec then come back. Besides this I'm seeing no other issues.

Try fuel as others have suggested.
