You can replace the section 1 with anything on a NA spec Z4M. All of the sensors are in the headers. Right now I'm running NA headers and a DKF section 1 with resonators instead of cats. Sounds great (with Stromung exhaust), no CEL and I'm told that if the cats get good and hot before a smog check that it should pass. And if it doesn't pass smog it's a relatively easy swap back to the stock section 1.

If you're interested my DKF section 1 will be for sale in the near future for pretty cheap since I'll be switching to CSL headers and Euro section 1.

If you are full catless, you won't pass smog. You can get a tune to get rid of a CEL.

Your best option is to keep the OEM headers and get a resonated (catless) DKF section 1.

DKF is considering a 400 cell catted attachment that will pass smog. A prototype is in the works, and if it meets DKF standards (which I expect it will because it's through a very reputable company), they will roll it out.

It is also depending on the smog shop! I made a mistake last time and went to an Emissions shop near by the house. The guy was crawling underneath the car and check the the exhaust setup (not sure if he know what the hell he was looking at since i only have the X-pipe and SS Race cans). He then failed the car for having Afe Intake.
It is good to know a "Mods Friendly" smog shop

I pass my last year in California with NA header, DKF resonators, SS x pipe, SS race mufflers, Afe cold air intake.

If you're interested in a DKF section 1 setup I can remove mine (though it will be a few weeks). Only the s-pipe and resonators have been installed and only for a few hunderd miles. The 100 cell and 300 cell are both brand new. 300 cells are polished and the rest of the pieces are cast iron gray ceramic coated. I've got over $1300 into the setup but I'm looking to get around half that. PM me if you'd like to talk about it.

With his original question being whether he would pass smog and have no CEL, will he with the DKF Section 1 and Euro headers?

Not until DKF rolls out the 400 cell California cats. Hopefully we'll know in the next couple of weeks.

There are several ways to fail in CA. Older tests, sniffer fail and visual fail. Newer, ODBII readiness and visual fail.

Euro Headers and Euro Cat will pass the sniffer test. Same with other aftermarket headers and a Euro cat. OEM NA headers and DKF will pass the sniffer too.

Readiness depends on the drive cycle and bunch of other technical readiness pieces, as well as stored codes (I'm not as familiar with this test).

Anything other than stock OEM stands a chance of failing visual on a shop that's looking for OEM parts. The Euro header/cats is the safest bet there, as they are OEM, albeit different part numbers and look a bit different. But the Z is rare enough that OEM like is probably a good, but not sure, bet. Go with anything not OEM and unless you have a friendly shop that's sniffer or ODBII based you're going to fail. Same goes for a non-stock airbox. Having tons of other mods is going to send red flags as well with the less friendly shops.

Luckily I no longer live in a state where this really matters but prefer to keep my car close to stock and really don't want a tune to get rid of the Check Engine Light.

For the above information, in California, are you able to buy an aftermarket cat? Maybe with a CARB sticker?

The OP is just looking for a solution with headers and not necessarily going to replace the section 1. Couldn't he just relocate the bungs for the O2 sensors from the headers to the section 1? Or would this fail a visual test?

This would be the least expensive option that yields the greatest results to my understanding.

That's what I had always planned on doing with my current set up (then again, I'm in Texas).

I run CSL headers and the Euro cats. No CEL and pass emissions no problemo.
