The way I understood it, the early roadsters (not sure about newer ones) all locked... problem is you could unlock by just pressing the button by the gear lever. AFAIK there is a simple mod to fix this... the dealer can do it or you if you don't want to fiddle.

I also understand none of the Coupes have the locking mechanism (might be wrong though)

If someone gets into your car, he's pretty much guaranteed to steal small things rather than the whole car. It's almost impossible to "drive away" a late model BMW without having the key and the microchip inside the key really near the car to start the engine.

If someone wants to steal your BMW, he doesn't even need to get inside the car. Someone from my apartment kept parking his 530i in the wrong spot and never displayed his parking permit. One time the managment called a tow-truck and towed his 530i away. I was standing right there and watching the whole drama. How much time did the tow-truck driver need to tow the 530 from start to finish? Probably 30 seconds.
