thinking of selling my 07' bmw z4 coupe for a 6 series..
I'm the original owner of the car and I"m thinking of selling it to get a 6 series. The car only has 27,000 miles on it and I'm looking to get a 6 series for the same price that I sell it for. Do you guys think this is a good decision? Are the 645i or 650's reliable cars? I'm thinking of putting both kids in the back seat when I pick them up, so I wanted to see if I would have enough room as well. We have a SUV as well, but I still want to use my 6-series from time to time. I'm on the fence about selling it since it just sits in my garage and can't be used unless we get a babysitter. What do you guys think?

Having been in almost the same situation as you right from the day I bought my Z4, I can empathize with you. There is absolutely nothing worse than seeing your Z4 gleaming in the sun after just being washed, but not being able to drive it because it won't hold the full family and there's nary a babysitter in sight.
However, I can assure you that the day will come when the kids are old enough to leave at home for an hour or so while you and the missus take the Z4 out for a spin. Nothing wrong with a 6 series as far as I know. If it has a twin turbo 3 litre six, watch out for the earlier version (the N54 I think?); they were prone to issues with the high pressure fuel pumps. The N55 is said to have corrected that issue. Isn't a Z4 non-M Coupe exceedingly rare?

The E63/E64 generation 6 series is not known for reliability, you can only get it as a V8 or if you go for an M the V10
Repairs are quite costly and I've seen way too many of them leak from every single possible gasket... I can't say that I would recommend it. Just my 2c

Excellent. But I think if the OP considers a car from 2009 or newer, he should be careful about which engine its got.

I would stay away from the 645i. If you go for the 6er get the 650i. Before buying send it for an inspection either to a good mechanic or BMW dealer. Ask them to specifically check for leaks.
I think on most BMW the problems come from their dumb 25,000km oil change interval. That's the dumbest thing ever thought. Generally I think BMW are reliable and easy to work on. Good luck and let us know whichever way you go. |

Personally I would get a family car that the kids can wreck and you won't have to worry about all the time. Keep the Z4 for the weekends etc. so you'll still have it when the kids are gone.... you may not like the price to replace it down the road when you start to get the itch again for something less practical

Huz - pretty sure the N54 was in the Z and 3 series and is an I6 cylinder, not a V8 or V10 like in the 6 series.
