Is something missing from my engine compartment...
Greetings all, I'm hoping I can get a little help here. My lease was up on my 2003 Z4 3.0, love the car so I bought a replacement 2005 Z4 3.0. I just brought the car home a few hours ago and was looking under the hood when I noticed something odd... On the passenger's (for North America) side of the engine compartment, near the firewall close to the side of the engine compartment is a black flat plate with 2 mounting points, threaded like screws, sticking up from it with nothing attached to it. The corner of the engine compartment is quite empty except for this plate... I've attached some pictures of what I'm talking about for reference. Not to sound like an idiot, but is something missing?
Thanks, dave |

It would appear as though your Flux Capacitor is missing. Without it, you can not time travel.
I'm at work and can't look at mine, but if I remember correctly you're OK, nothing is missing.

The AIR Pump is much further forward in the engine compartment than that. He's looking all the way back by the firewall. I don't remember anything down there in mine as i occassionally have to remove leaves from the tube that is right below the mounting plate he's talking about.

I had a chance to look at mine and that space is empty, I don't even have the "Y" shaped bracked with the two studs. I do have the plumbing for the AC unit as you do.
I may know someone (a friend of a friend of a friend) who has a lightly used flux capacitor for sale.

Thanks everyone, especially the offer of the used flux capacitor... I'm guessing it was easier for BMW to build the mount onto all cars and just leave it empty for.... well for cars that don't need whatever it's for. That being said I'm going to ask my dealer today what it is for... I'll keep everyone posted.

Well here's what I got from my dealer...
"I have just spoken to our Fixed Operations Manager in the service department. Although he is not exactly sure of the intended use the mount under your hood; he assured me that it is not uncommon for such things to be found. Basically, due to varying options for specific vehicles; the infrastructure for such options is often included on all vehicles of the same year and model. This occurs even if (say) a certain computer module (that would be mounted on that support) is not even available or necessary for Canadian BMWs. Also, he was able to presume, based on the lack of wear on the support and bolts that it has never been used and you are, therefore, not missing any piece of your new vehicle." Looks like it's basically the car's appendix. |
