I have them on my car right now. Correct tire for the street, for the price.
One of the worst tire I drove on the track. Side wall are so soft it makes the car unstable at high speed during braking zone. I also have RS3 and there is a big difference on the track between those tires. |

Agreed and they stay quiet longer than most or at least they have for me. I just bought a new set for my M3 and they were $800 and some change.

from the sound of all the feedback my decision is rather simple LOL
(which is surprising for such a subjective topic!)

Folks, I've been following this thread, and to be honest although I've had this question in my mind the whole time I've been reticent to actually post out, out of any potential judgement/etc. I decided to do it anyway, please take it as a genuine search for information; that's what it is.
My current car is my second Z4 and although I bought it new in '08 I just crossed the 15k mile mark. OEM tires are still in terrific shape, but will need replacing at some point, obviously. Additionally, current car is my second Z4, previous was a pre-facelift I bought new in '05 and had until '08. I drove my previous car daily and had to replace those tires much sooner than I do now, when I did I switched from OEM RFTs to Pirelli P Zero Neros and was greatly satisfied. On the '05 car (3.0i/Sport Package) the switch to non-RFTs was dramatic, as has been well documented here. However, it's my belief that BMW listened to customer feedback because my current car ('08 3.0si/Sport Package) drives nothing like the previous, the OEM RFTs/suspension setup are a great combo (I believe they adjusted the suspension settings and that RFT tire tech got better - and continues to), and I will stick with RFTs when I replace them. I also had a friend on this forum (GeorgeK) who was in what could have been a bad accident, but he was partially saved by his RFTs (the other part was his good driving). FWIW. Finally, the minor mods I've done to my car have all been OEM equipment or the better equivalent. As I bought my car new, I paid premium for it and therefore do my best to put premium into it. When it comes to tires, my plan is to either replace them with one of two options, a Michelin PS2 RFT (ZP) or Pirelli P Zero RFT. Also, side note here, I do not track my car, but I do drive it VERY spirited on the roads that allow it. I've done both local HDPE and attended BMW's 2-day M School in Spartanburg, so while I'm by no means a racer (pro or amateur) I do feel I know the limits of my car, how to get to them and what to do if I exceed them. In short, at times, I push it. So, my question is, are tires like the PS2 or P Zero the price they are for the sake of it? Said differently, do folks feel like they get the same performance/safety/ability/etc from something like the V12 as they would from a tire that's 3xs the price? (I also understand the V12 is a non-RFT, even the non-RFT PSSs & PZeros are a large cost increase). Or, is it simply a question of money, in that the V12 is a great value for what you get, but, if you had your choice, you'd put something like a PS2 or PZero on there? Would love to hear people's opinions on the PS2 or P Zero being as good as they cost or if it's more a case of paying-for-the-name. Appreciate it. Last edited by mbetoni; 06-21-2012 at 05:06 PM.. |

I think the difference will be sustaining grip/quiet/tread over a long period. I bet the PSS will last longer and maintain performance longer too, but at a higher initial cost.

is it odd that the treadwear of the PS2 and PZero (220) is rated lower that the V12 (280) ?

I wouldn't think it odd. The PS2 & PZero are ultra-sticky (for street use) tires. Typically, exceptional grip comes with a shorter life than a tire that lasts forever but is much harder (and thus not quite as sticky).

You can't really compare tread wear ratings across tire brands. Tread wear ratings is only meant to be used within the same brand.

How much PSI are you guys using for you V12's? I can't remember what I was using last year and what people told me they like best. Gonna check the air in mine tomorrow so any help would be appreciated.

mbetoni, I had an 07 3.0SI, I never an issue with the run flats on that car...it had the M sports package with the 3 piece wheels on it. I didn't even get close to wear on the tires until the 30K mark.
Right now I have V12's in the back...just got it installed tonight. The chamber in the back was adjusted to be a little bit less negative...but I am not sure if it's the tires or tire pressure or that's it new and still have oil on them...but doing 70 to 80 on the freeway didn't leave me feeling confident. I'll probably take it back to the shop and have it adjusted to stock alignment if this doesn't change. Not sure if it's any difference having the stock conti's up front and new V12's in the back. The alignment shop had 38 PSI cold for the rear... I didn't check what the front was... I probably will go 36 PSI in the back and 34 or 35 PSI up front. |

I'm doing 33 psi in the front and 38 psi in the rear on my Z4 with 225/255 V12's and they seem happy.

Mbetoni may be on to something here!
My 2006 3.0si drove terribly until I replaced the run flats with Hankooks - best thing I ever did. Last year, one buddy of mine bought a 2007 si with sport package and 18 wheels. I drove it once with the stock tires, and it felt, well, not bad at all to drive! Another buddy of mine bought a 2008 si with 17 inch wheels last year, albeit, no sport package on that car. I drove it too and the ride was so nice that I was convinced that the run flats had already been replaced. Was I surprised to see that the car was actually equipped with run flats!

Should all be dependent on how much tire-rollover you're getting.

I went with the pressure recommended by the chart on the door column. I ended up having to drop the rears by 3 psi because the tire pressure light came on one day. i thought it was strange that dropping to 35 psi (I think) cured it. that was back in April; car has been fine since.

I never got them in June as planned either, decided to squeeze out the year on the current runflats and buy the V12s in the fall, hopefully the rebate will be back

Same issue here. Out the four I bought, 3 were pretty much not round. They're not BAD, and are a good value...but next set I will go back to Michelin.

LOL @ vibrations, every day I drive the 10 yr old roadster I have some sort of vibration/rattle, its the nature of extremely poor roads in the Upper Midwest

Laugh if you like. Tires that "refuse" to balance issues are unacceptable. One look on the Hunter Road Force machine, with them spinning, and you can see how out of round they are. Besides, mine's only six years old...and I have absolutely NO other vibrations or rattles...even on bad roads.
